Congress criticizes PM Modi after Donald Trump praises Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir and gives special recognition to PM Shehbaz Sharif during the Middle East peace summit in Egypt.
At the recent Middle East peace summit held in Egypt, former US President Donald Trump praised Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir, describing him as his “favourite field marshal.” Trump also gave special recognition to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the event, sparking strong reactions from India’s opposition Congress party.
On Tuesday, the Congress party openly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government following Trump’s remarks. Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary in-charge of communications, took to X (formerly Twitter) questioning the nature of the friendship between India and the US in light of Trump’s actions.
Ramesh wrote, “But what sort of friendship is this? President Trump hosted Field Marshal Asim Munir to an unprecedented lunch at the White House on June 18, 2025. This is the same Field Marshal whose inflammatory and communal remarks formed the backdrop to the Pahalgam terror attacks carried out by Pakistan on April 22, 2025.”
He further added, “Yesterday in Egypt, President Trump called Asim Munir ‘my favourite Field Marshal’ and gave a special place to the Prime Minister of Pakistan. What kind of signal is President Trump sending to India, despite Mr. Modi’s desperate attempts to ingratiate himself with the US President?”

During the summit, Trump praised Asim Munir and then invited Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif, who was standing behind him on stage, to join the conversation. Sharif used the opportunity to laud Trump as “a man of peace” and revealed that Pakistan had nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in fostering peace between India and Pakistan.
Sharif said, “I would say that Pakistan has nominated President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his outstanding and extraordinary contributions—first, to stop war between India and Pakistan, and then to achieve a ceasefire along with his very wonderful team.”
Prime Minister keeps calling President Trump his good friend. To be fair President Trump also keeps calling Mr. Modi his good friend.

However, India has repeatedly dismissed Trump’s claims of brokering a ceasefire between the two countries. At the time of the ceasefire announcement, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri clarified that the decision was made directly between the armies of India and Pakistan without any US mediation. Modi had reportedly informed Trump during a phone call that the ceasefire resulted from bilateral military talks.
This development has raised questions about India-US relations, especially given the ongoing efforts by Prime Minister Modi to strengthen ties with the United States. Congress’s criticism highlights concerns over the signals being sent by US leadership and the implications for India’s foreign policy.
