Delhi government to revamp Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation, accelerate heritage projects, and rename the body for better preservation of Old Delhi.
The Delhi government is all set to accelerate heritage-focused development projects in Old Delhi by revamping the Shahjahanabad redevelopment framework, including renaming the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC). The move aims to strengthen the corporation’s role in preserving the historic Walled City while pushing modern infrastructure initiatives.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, chairing the 38th board meeting of the SRDC, discussed comprehensive restructuring plans to revitalise the Shahjahanabad area. Officials revealed that the board will propose three alternative names for the corporation, which will be finalised after official approval.
Gupta emphasized that the government intends to use the revamped body to deliver a faster, more efficient Shahjahanabad redevelopment while preserving its historical character. “The time has come for a comprehensive revival of this institution. We are not only changing the board’s name but also accelerating the real redevelopment of Old Delhi and Shahjahanabad to restore its heritage and glory,” she said.

The board also reviewed ongoing projects in Chandni Chowk, covering the stretch from Lal Jain Mandir to Fatehpuri Masjid. Plans include pedestrianisation, public space beautification, and heritage-sensitive infrastructure improvements. Officials said development works worth around ₹160 crore are currently underway on 28 roads in Old Delhi, including road construction, sanitation upgrades, and cleanliness initiatives.
As part of the Shahjahanabad redevelopment, the government is also preparing a phased plan to relocate overhead electricity wires underground. Additionally, the historic Town Hall is set to be developed as a major heritage landmark, contributing to the cultural and architectural identity of Old Delhi.
“Old Delhi is the heart of the national capital. Our goal is to preserve its historical heritage, identity, and cultural dignity while equipping the area with modern facilities. We aim to transform it into a vibrant heritage zone with national and global appeal,” Gupta said.
During the meeting, officials examined the SRDC’s functioning under the previous government. Gupta alleged irregularities in past projects, noting that a redevelopment project initiated in 2018 with an estimated cost of ₹65 crore escalated to nearly ₹148 crore, raising questions about approvals and procedural compliance.
Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood added that the review revealed multiple shortcomings in past operations. “The previous government carried out projects for optics rather than concrete planning. Old Delhi, historically the Walled City and home to Delhi’s original population, did not receive the serious attention it deserved in terms of development and heritage preservation,” he said.
With these measures, the Delhi government aims to ensure a transparent, efficient, and heritage-conscious Shahjahanabad redevelopment, combining modern urban infrastructure with cultural preservation.
