Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched various Barak Valley development projects worth ₹23,550 crore from Silchar, Assam. The Prime Minister performed the groundbreaking ceremony for three major projects at Ambikapur in Silchar: the Silchar High-Speed Corridor (₹22,864 crore), the Silchar Town Flyover (approximately ₹565 crore), and the Patharkandi Agricultural College (₹122 crore).
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said that southern Assam’s Barak Valley is poised to become a crucial gateway linking India to Southeast Asia. He emphasized that decades of neglect during the Congress rule hindered the region’s potential, but the current government is transforming it through strategic initiatives under India’s Act East Policy.
Silchar-Shillong High-Speed Corridor
Highlighting infrastructure development, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the Silchar-Shillong High-Speed Corridor, Northeast India’s first access-controlled expressway. Stretching 166 km with an investment of ₹22,860 crore, the corridor will reduce travel time between Guwahati and Silchar from 8.5 hours to just 5 hours. PM Modi said this project will accelerate economic growth, enhance regional trade, and strengthen Barak Valley’s position as a strategic commercial hub.

Silchar Town Flyover and Road Connectivity
PM Modi also inaugurated the Elevated Corridor on NH-306 from Trunk Road near Capital Point to Rangirkhari Point in Silchar (Phase-I). This Barak Valley development project is designed to decongest one of Silchar’s busiest roads, improve connectivity with neighboring states including Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur, and boost local economic activity. The Flyover is expected to significantly ease traffic and facilitate smoother movement for residents and businesses in the valley.
Patharkandi Agricultural College
In a historic step for education and agriculture, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the Patharkandi Agricultural College in Karimganj district. This Barak Valley development project aims to strengthen agricultural education and research in Assam, providing students from the Barak Valley and surrounding regions with access to high-quality, locally accessible academic programs. The institution is expected to foster research-driven agricultural innovation and create new opportunities for rural youth.
Strategic and Economic Impacts
PM Modi emphasized that these Barak Valley development projects are designed not only to enhance infrastructure but also to empower local communities. He noted that the valley’s fertile lands, tea gardens, and strategic location make it an ideal center for economic growth. By improving roads, transport, and educational facilities, these initiatives aim to provide long-term benefits, including employment generation, regional trade expansion, and agricultural innovation.
Speaking on global conditions, the Prime Minister assured citizens that the government is committed to mitigating the impact of international conflicts on India, ensuring that development continues smoothly across regions, including the Barak Valley.
