Sanjay Singh criticizes PM Modi’s appeal on gold, fuel and travel cuts, alleging post-election policy shift and rising inflation burden on citizens.
The recent public appeal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sparked a fresh political controversy across the country. During a public address in Hyderabad’s Secunderabad on May 10, the Prime Minister urged citizens to reduce non-essential consumption, including avoiding gold purchases for a year, limiting foreign travel, and cutting down on fuel usage amid global tensions linked to the Iran conflict.
The statement quickly drew a strong reaction from Aam Aadmi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, who accused the government of changing its stance after elections and putting additional financial burden on citizens.
Sanjay Singh took a sharp dig at the Centre, saying, “Election is over, public use is over,” suggesting that government policies shift immediately after electoral cycles end. He alleged that during the election period, the government consistently claimed there was no shortage of fuel or gas, but the situation appears to have changed once voting concluded in five states.

He further claimed that after elections, prices of commercial LPG cylinders reportedly increased to around ₹993, while domestic gas prices also saw a rise, adding pressure on households already dealing with inflation.
Sanjay Singh argued that citizens are now being advised to reduce consumption of petrol, diesel, cooking oil, and even gold purchases in the name of patriotism and national interest. According to him, these appeals reflect economic stress being shifted onto ordinary people.
He also referenced welfare schemes in Bihar, alleging that financial assistance provided to citizens is later followed by harsh treatment on the ground. Singh further criticized the government for organizing large political rallies using mass transport, while simultaneously urging citizens to save fuel.
Targeting the Prime Minister’s international engagements, Singh said that while PM Modi travels abroad frequently, including upcoming visits to countries like the UAE, ordinary citizens are being asked to adopt austerity and sacrifice.
He concluded by alleging that the government’s approach favors the wealthy while leaving the common public to struggle with rising costs and economic pressure.
The remarks have intensified political debate, with opposition leaders accusing the government of double standards, while ruling party supporters defend the appeal as a responsible step toward managing national resources amid global uncertainty.
