AAP leaders Piyush Patel and Deepak Patel detained in Bharuch ahead of Sardar Dham inauguration, sparking political controversy in Gujarat.
In a development ahead of the Sardar Dham inauguration event, two local leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Piyush Patel and Deepak Patel, were detained by Bharuch Local Crime Branch (LCB) and taken to the C Division Police Station early Monday morning. The incident has sparked a political controversy in Gujarat, with the party alleging misuse of administrative power to suppress dissent.
According to AAP Bharuch district president Piyush Patel, the detention took place around 6:00 AM, just hours before the high-profile Sardar Dham Inauguration ceremony where top political leaders, including the Prime Minister and state officials, were scheduled to attend.
“Opposition voices are being silenced,” says AAP leader
Speaking through a video message, Piyush Patel accused the authorities of adopting an authoritarian approach. He alleged that individuals raising their voice against government decisions are being detained without justification.
“Such governance reflects a situation where even peaceful opposition or social criticism leads to detention,” Patel said.
He further stated that the party’s opposition was limited to social media expression and not physical disruption of the event.
Controversy over proposed honour to Prime Minister
The controversy also stems from reports that community leaders had decided to present a “Sardar Patel Award” to the Prime Minister during the Sardar Dham Inauguration ceremony. AAP leaders claimed they opposed this move, which they believe led to increased police action against them.
“We were not planning to attend the event. Our protest was only through social media platforms,” Patel clarified.

Allegations of political misuse of police force
The AAP leader also accused the administration of diverting police resources for political purposes instead of maintaining law and order.
“Police should focus on public safety, not on tracking opposition voices or political workers,” he said.
He added that detaining political activists for expressing dissent is a matter of serious concern in a democratic setup.
Call for public awareness
Piyush Patel urged citizens to widely share the video message, claiming it would help people understand how certain community leaders are influencing politics and misleading society.
He also warned that if community leaders enter active politics, opposition will continue in a democratic manner.
Incident across multiple Gujarat regions highlighted
The issue has gained attention across Bharuch, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vapi, Valsad, and Narmada regions, where political observers are closely watching developments around the Sardar Dham inauguration event.
