AAP leader Ramesh Mer urges Gujarat govt not to assign census duties to teachers amid staff shortage, demands separate cadre for non-teaching work.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Ramesh Mer AAP has raised serious concerns over the deployment of school teachers for census-related duties in Gujarat, especially at a time when the state is already facing a shortage of शिक्षकों (teachers). He has urged the government to ensure that teachers are exclusively dedicated to education-related responsibilities.
“Teachers are being overburdened,” says AAP Ramesh Me
In a video statement, AAP Ramesh Mer said that the government has initiated the census process, but a large number of teachers have been assigned to field duties. He questioned the repeated use of teachers for non-educational government tasks.
According to AAP Ramesh Mer, teachers are essential pillars of society who play a crucial role in shaping the future of students. He said it is unfair to repeatedly assign them duties such as census work, election responsibilities, vaccination drives, and even animal surveys.

Demand for separate workforce for census operations
AAP Ramesh Mer emphasized that India, including Gujarat, has a large pool of educated unemployed youth who can be trained and deployed for such administrative tasks. He suggested the creation of a dedicated workforce so that teachers can focus solely on education.
He said, “Teachers are the backbone of a strong society, but they are being continuously diverted from their core responsibilities.”
Impact on education system highlighted
The AAP leader warned that excessive non-teaching duties are damaging the quality of education in government schools. He pointed out that teachers already have heavy academic responsibilities, and additional workload is affecting both teaching quality and personal time.
He also noted that teachers are being sent for fieldwork in extreme summer conditions, which he described as unfair and disrespectful to the teaching community.
Call for policy change
AAP Ramesh Mer urged the government to reconsider its approach and ensure that teachers are not overburdened with administrative duties. He appealed for a structured system where unemployed youth are engaged for census and similar works, allowing teachers to focus on students and classroom teaching.
He concluded that weakening the education system will directly impact children from rural and economically weaker backgrounds studying in government schools.
