Arvind Kejriwal slams PM Modi’s appeal to stop gold purchases and foreign travel, questioning if India is facing an Economic Emergency. Read the full details.
A massive political storm has erupted following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s unusual public appeal for citizens to stop buying gold and avoid foreign travel for a year. AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has hit back sharply, questioning if the country is heading toward a state of Economic Emergency.
Kejriwal Questions India’s Financial Health
In a fiery response on social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), the former Delhi CM demanded that the Prime Minister place the “true facts” regarding India’s economic status before the public. Referring to the PM’s suggestions to cut back on essential lifestyle choices, Kejriwal asked, “Is this the sound of an Economic Emergency? Has the country fallen into a massive financial crisis? This has never happened in the history of independent India.”
He further added that a Prime Minister asking citizens to cut down on food, gold, and travel suggests a deeper underlying issue that the government is allegedly hiding.

What Triggered the ‘Economic Emergency’ Debate?
The controversy began on May 10, 2026, during a rally in Telangana, where PM Modi cited global instability—specifically the US-Iran war and soaring crude oil prices ($105+ per barrel)—as a threat to India’s foreign exchange reserves. To mitigate this, the PM made several unprecedented appeals:
Gold: Refrain from buying gold for one year to save foreign currency.
Foreign Travel: Postpone destination weddings and international vacations.
Fuel Conservation: Revive the “Work from Home” culture and adopt carpooling to reduce petrol/diesel consumption.
Consumption: Reduce edible oil intake by 10% and shift to “Swadeshi” products.
The Economic Reality Behind the Appeal
While the opposition labels it an Economic Emergency, government sources suggest these are “preemptive patriotic measures.” With the Rupee weakening to 94.90 against the Dollar, the government aims to protect the $691 billion forex cushion.
However, the political fallout continues as the AAP and Congress accuse the Center of failing to secure energy reserves, leading to a situation where the common man is being asked to sacrifice personal milestones like weddings and travel.
