England legend Geoffrey Boycott urges Harry Brook to bat responsibly in the Ashes, citing Don Bradman as an example. Learn why controlling wickets is crucial for Brook’s cricketing future.
England cricket legend Geoffrey Boycott has once again shared his thoughts on Harry Brook, urging the young Yorkshire batsman to exercise more responsibility at the crease. While acknowledging Brook’s immense talent, Boycott emphasized that the England batter needs to learn the art of preserving his wicket, drawing lessons from the greatest batsman of all time, Sir Don Bradman.
Harry Brook entered the Australian Ashes with huge expectations, expected to lead England’s batting and play a decisive role in securing just a second series win in Australia in four decades. However, Brook’s performances have been inconsistent. Despite being England’s second-highest run-scorer, he has often thrown away starts, averaging only 28 across the first three Tests as England lost the series in just three matches.
A key issue highlighted by experts has been Brook’s tendency to get out in unusual ways, including risky shots like attempting a reverse sweep against Nathan Lyon in Adelaide while well-set. This has drawn criticism from pundits and cricket enthusiasts alike.

Boycott, known for his candid opinions, stressed that while Harry Brook’s natural attacking style is not inherently wrong, he must exercise control. “Harry Brook, nobody wants to rein you in or stop you playing your strokes because you are ‘box office’ and can win matches, but so far you flatter yourself and then get out,” Boycott wrote in his column for The Telegraph. “What a waste of talent! Consider how many times bowlers have beaten you with a good delivery and how often you give your wicket away.”
He also noted that fast scoring is not a problem if executed wisely, citing Bradman’s aggressive approach in his era. Boycott suggested that Harry Brook should find a balance between his natural attacking instincts and the need to protect his wicket. “Take note from the greatest ever batsman and do not give your wicket away. You could be the greatest batsman of this generation and help England become the best team in the world,” Boycott concluded.
Currently batting at number five behind Joe Root, Harry Brook has two more Tests in the Ashes series to prove he can consistently deliver against top-quality opposition. Analysts believe that if Brook learns to combine his attacking prowess with better judgment, he could become a cornerstone of England’s batting for years to come.
