In a rain-affected match, Mumbai Indians faced a narrow 3-wicket loss, with the outcome decided on the final delivery. Following this defeat, MI have slipped to fourth place on the points table. With six teams vying for just four playoff spots, the competition is getting increasingly intense. Here’s how the Hardik Pandya-led side can still qualify for the playoffs from here.
Mumbai Indians’ Road to the IPL Playoffs:
With 14 points from 12 games and a net run rate of +1.156 — the best among the top five teams — Mumbai Indians hold a statistical advantage that could prove crucial in a close finish.
At present, the scenario is straightforward: if MI win both of their remaining matches, even by narrow margins, they are likely to secure a playoff spot. However, a single loss from here would mean they’d need to depend on other match results, as 16 points might not guarantee a place in the top four this season.
Mumbai Indians Coach on Playoff Chances:
Reflecting on the team’s performance, MI coach Mahela Jayawardene said, “At one stage, we had five matches with just one win and four losses. Since then, every game has been a virtual must-win for us. We’ve had a strong run, and given how competitive the tournament is, it’s a positive that we’re up against teams in the same playoff race — it means our fate is still in our own hands.”
He further added, “We were probably 30 runs short on that pitch, but the bowlers did a great job, created chances, and the fielding was sharp — the team showed great fight. From here on, we’ll approach each match as if it’s a playoff.”
