PM Modi says India-Australia ties have reached new heights during his Melbourne visit, praising the Indian diaspora for strengthening bilateral relations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that India-Australia ties have reached unprecedented levels, crediting the Indian diaspora for playing a vital role in strengthening the relationship between the two countries. Addressing a packed community event in Melbourne, PM Modi praised the contribution of Indians living in Australia and highlighted the growing strategic, cultural and economic partnership between New Delhi and Canberra.
Calling it his third visit to Australia in the last 12 years, Modi said the frequency of his visits reflects the remarkable progress in India-Australia ties. He recalled that when he visited Australia in 2014, it was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 28 years.
“This is my third visit in 12 years—a hat-trick of visits. It reflects how far India-Australia ties have progressed. The biggest credit goes to all of you, the Indian community,” PM Modi said while addressing the gathering.

PM Modi Praises Indian Community in Australia
The Prime Minister acknowledged the enthusiasm of the audience and described the event as a “blockbuster.” He also paid respect to the traditional custodians of the land before expressing his happiness at meeting the Indian community in Melbourne.
Modi spoke about the unique lifestyle of Indian families living abroad, saying many households manage two different time zones while staying emotionally connected to their roots through daily video calls and celebrations.
He said the Indian diaspora has successfully integrated into Australian society while preserving Indian traditions.
“We Indians are like sugar dissolving in milk, making it sweeter. We contribute to Australia’s development while keeping India’s culture alive. The milk may be Australian, but the tea is still Indian,” he remarked.
Melbourne’s Indian Spirit Strengthens India-Australia Ties
Speaking about Melbourne’s multicultural identity, PM Modi said the city has embraced Indian culture through vibrant neighbourhoods popularly known as “Little India” or “Mini India.”
He humorously referred to shopping festivals in Indian markets, saying people often end up buying more than they planned because of attractive sales.
The Prime Minister noted that these cultural spaces demonstrate how India-Australia ties extend beyond diplomacy into everyday life, business and community interactions.

Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan reaffirmed her government’s commitment to strengthening India-Australia ties, describing India as a trusted partner.
Addressing the Indian diaspora, Allan said Victoria warmly welcomes Indian students, businesses, families and entrepreneurs.
“Victoria respects India. We value your people. The Indian community is not just accepted—they are part of who we are,” she said.
She also highlighted India’s growing importance as a strategic and economic partner, adding that the relationship is built on trust, shared opportunities and long-term cooperation.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also addressed the gathering and praised the enthusiasm of the Indian community.
