India Targets Pakistan’s Air Defence Systems After Foiling Missile Attacks
India successfully foiled a series of missile and drone attacks launched by Pakistan across multiple military sites in northern and western India on the night of May 7-8, 2025. The targeted locations included key strategic military sites in Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bathinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj.
Pakistan’s Attack and India’s Defence Systems
The Ministry of Defence reported that Pakistan deployed both drones and missiles in an attempt to target critical military infrastructure across the aforementioned locations. However, India’s Integrated Counter Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) Grid, along with advanced air defence systems, successfully intercepted and neutralized the incoming threats. The debris recovered from the attacks confirmed that these were launched from Pak, according to Indian officials.
A statement from the Ministry of Defence further revealed that in retaliation for the cross-border assault, India’s armed forces targeted air defence radars and systems located within the country. The response was described as proportionate, with the Indian military successfully neutralizing an air defence system in Lahore.
Pakistan Escalates Hostilities
In addition to the missile and drone attacks, Pakistan escalated tensions along the Line of Control (LoC) by initiating unprovoked mortar and artillery fire in various sectors of Jammu and Kashmir, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri. Reports indicate that the Pakistani artillery fire has led to significant civilian casualties.
At least 16 people, including three women and five children, were killed as a result of the shelling. Several others have been injured in the attack, which prompted an immediate response from India’s military to counter and neutralize the mortar fire. Indian forces engaged in counter-fire operations to cease the ongoing artillery attacks.
The Indian government condemned Pak’s unprovoked actions and vowed to take necessary measures to protect its citizens and military personnel. “India’s response has been in the same domain with the same intensity as Pakistan’s attack,” the Ministry of Defence said in its statement.
The military strike on Pakistan’s air defence systems marks an escalation in the ongoing tensions between the two neighboring countries, both of which have experienced periodic hostilities along the LoC in recent years. While India has consistently emphasized the need for peace and stability in the region, the repeated cross-border provocations by the country have heightened concerns over further escalation.
