Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], May 2 (ANI): Mumbai Indians (MI) fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah overtook seasoned spinner Amit Mishra to become the seventh-highest wicket-taker in Indian Premier League (IPL) history on Thursday.
Bumrah climbed the rankings following MI’s match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
In the game, he bowled a tight spell, conceding just 15 runs and taking 2 wickets in his four overs. His crucial breakthroughs came in the powerplay, where he dismissed RR captain Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer in the same over, offering much-needed support to fellow pacers Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar. Despite bowling just one over in the powerplay, Bumrah’s impact helped dismantle RR’s top order.
Jasprit Bumrah, now Mumbai Indians’ leading wicket-taker, has climbed to seventh place on the all-time IPL wicket-takers list with 176 wickets in 140 games. He holds an average of 22.21, an economy rate of 7.28, and a personal best of 5/10. Bumrah has claimed two five-wicket hauls and has now surpassed Amit Mishra, who took 174 wickets in 162 matches at an average of 23.82.
Topping the all-time IPL wicket chart is Yuzvendra Chahal, currently with Punjab Kings (PBKS), boasting 218 wickets from 170 matches at an average of 22.36, an economy rate of 7.91, and best figures of 5/40.
Since returning from injury, Bumrah has impressed in IPL 2025, picking up 11 wickets in seven matches at an average of 17.72 and an economy rate of 6.96, with his best figures being 4/22.
In the match, Rajasthan Royals (RR) opted to bowl first after winning the toss, a decision that quickly backfired. Mumbai Indians’ (MI) openers Ryan Rickelton (61 off 38, with seven fours and three sixes) and Rohit Sharma (53 off 36, with nine boundaries) launched a dominant 116-run opening stand. After their dismissals, Suryakumar Yadav (48* off 23, including four fours and three sixes) and captain Hardik Pandya (48* off 23, with six fours and a six) built an unbeaten 94-run partnership, powering MI to a formidable 217/2 in their 20 overs. Maheesh Theekshana and RR skipper Riyan Parag took a wicket each.
In reply, RR crumbled under pressure from MI’s fierce bowling attack, slipping to 47/5 during the powerplay. Jofra Archer was the only notable contributor with 30 off 27 balls (two fours, two sixes), but RR were bowled out for just 117 in 16.1 overs, suffering a heavy 100-run defeat.
Karn Sharma (3/23) and Trent Boult (3/28) stood out as the leading bowlers for Mumbai Indians (MI), while Jasprit Bumrah also maintained pressure with an economical four-over spell, taking 2/15. Captain Hardik Pandya chipped in with a wicket as well.
Ryan Rickelton was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his stellar performance.
With this win, MI sits at the top of the points table with 14 points from seven victories and four defeats. On the other hand, Rajasthan Royals (RR) are now out of playoff contention, placed eighth with just six points from three wins and eight losses. (ANI)
