The governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uike, visited the home minister at his office the day before the meeting. Amit Shah, the union’s home minister, presided over a high-level conference on Monday to discuss Manipur’s security state. Since the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was reelected to power earlier this month, this is the first high-level meeting that the national government has held. The meeting was held at the Ministry of Home Affairs in North Block, Delhi, and attendees included Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Chief of the Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka, Army Chief General Manoj Pande, Army Chief (Designate) Lt General Upendra Dwivedi, GoC Three Core HS Sahi, Security Advisor to Manipur Kuldiep Singh, Manipur Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi, Manipur DGP Rajiv Singh, and Assam Rifles DG Pradeep Chandran Nair. The meeting takes place one day after the governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uike, visited the home minister at his office and received an update on the condition of affairs in the northeastern region.
Since there had been reports of new violence in the northern state, the conference was conducted at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Manipur has seen fighting between the Kukis and Meiteis communities since May 3 of last year. The fighting has resulted in at least 225 deaths to far and the displacement of almost 50,000 people, the majority of whom are still living in relief centers.
The previous few weeks have seen new acts of violence in the northeastern state, including the burning of a school facility close to Moreh and the discovery of the beheaded body of a missing individual.
In the Kangpokpi district last week, armed terrorists assaulted the vehicle of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s enhanced security team, injuring a security officer and a civilian driver.
Dr. Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), stated on June 10 that Manipur has been waiting for peace for a year and that this problem has to be given priority.
Bhagwat emphasized the importance of putting aside political hyperbole and concentrating on the issues confronting the country.
