AAP leaders were detained while heading to Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel’s residence over women’s safety concerns raised by Payal Sakariya.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and workers were detained by police while they were heading towards the Gujarat Chief Minister’s residence to seek answers from the government over women’s safety in the state.
The development followed a press conference by AAP Mahila Morcha president Payal Sakariya and state organisation secretary Vikram Dave at the Gandhinagar Circuit House. The party said its delegation wanted to directly raise concerns over crimes against women with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
AAP Raises Questions Over Women’s Safety
Payal Sakariya alleged that despite years of BJP rule in Gujarat, women’s safety remains a serious concern. She claimed that official figures showed more than 6,100 rape cases and over 50,000 cases of abduction of women were registered between 2015 and 2024.
She also raised questions about the government’s spending on women’s safety, asking where the ₹25,968 crore budget allocation over the past five years had been utilised.
The figures and allegations cited by the AAP leader are part of the party’s claims and have not been independently verified from the material provided.
‘Government Must Present a Clear Action Plan’
Sakariya demanded that the Gujarat government announce a clear action plan for preventing crimes against women and strengthening law enforcement.
She also criticised Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, accusing him of focusing on publicity instead of addressing law-and-order concerns. Referring to his social media presence, she said, “You are the Home Minister, not the Reel Minister,” and urged him to concentrate on strengthening public safety.
The AAP leader alleged that incidents of theft, murder, liquor and drug-related offences, along with crimes against women, reflected weaknesses in the state’s law-and-order system.

AAP Questions Women’s Commission Vacancy
Sakariya also raised the issue of the Gujarat State Women’s Commission, alleging that the post of its chairperson had remained vacant for years. She described the alleged vacancy as a sign of the government’s lack of attention towards women’s issues.
She said women’s safety should not be treated as a political issue but as a matter affecting the entire society.
AAP Delegation Sought Meeting With CM
According to AAP, party leaders including Payal Sakariya, Vikram Dave, Kashiraben Mehta, Neha Kevalramani, Lalbhai Vanjara and Dilip Trivedi were detained while heading towards the CM’s residence.
The party said the delegation wanted to ask Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel directly about the government’s response to crimes against women and its proposed measures to prevent such incidents.
Sakariya alleged that the police action showed that the government was unwilling to face questions from the Opposition. She said AAP would continue raising the issue of women’s safety and demanding accountability from the state government.
AAP Demands Stronger Measures for Women’s Safety
The party has called for concrete measures to improve women’s security across Gujarat and demanded that the government explain how its allocated resources are being used.
The latest confrontation comes amid a broader political debate in Gujarat over law and order and the government’s handling of crimes against women. AAP has said it will continue pressing the government for a specific action plan and greater accountability.
