PM Modi returns to New Delhi after a two-day Bhutan visit, inaugurating Punatsanchchhu-II hydropower project and strengthening India-Bhutan ties.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday concluded his two-day state visit to Bhutan and departed for New Delhi. During the visit, he strengthened India-Bhutan ties, inaugurated major projects, and held extensive talks with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.
Inauguration of Punatsanchchhu-II Hydropower Project
On Tuesday, November 11, PM Modi and King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck jointly inaugurated the 1,020-MW Punatsanchchhu-II hydropower project, built with Indian assistance. The project is expected to supply electricity to both India and Bhutan, further enhancing regional energy cooperation.

In addition, the Indian government announced a concessional credit line of ₹4,000 crore to fund future energy projects in Bhutan, reinforcing India’s commitment to sustainable development and infrastructure support in the Himalayan kingdom.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this visit aims to “further deepen the India-Bhutan bilateral friendship and advance cooperation in various areas.”
In a special gesture, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck personally came to the airport to see off PM Modi, highlighting the warmth of the bilateral relationship.
Participation in Cultural and Spiritual Events
During his visit, PM Modi also participated in Bhutan’s Global Peace Prayer Festival and inaugurated the Kalachakra Empowerment ceremony alongside King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck.
Earlier, PM Modi addressed a function at Changlimethang Stadium to mark the 70th birth anniversary of Bhutan’s fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. He praised the former king’s lifelong efforts in strengthening India-Bhutan ties and highlighted the centuries-old spiritual and cultural bond between the two nations.
