PM Narendra Modi highlights India’s rise as a global innovation hub, focusing on ease of doing research, boosting R&D, deep-tech startups, and emerging technologies like green hydrogen and quantum computing.
PM Narendra Modi stated that India is no longer just a consumer of technology but has emerged as a global leader in technological innovation. Speaking at the Emerging Science and Technology Innovation Conclave 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, PM Modi emphasized that the government is committed to creating a modern innovation ecosystem by improving the ease of doing research in the country.
The Prime Minister highlighted that India has developed the world’s most successful digital public infrastructure and stressed that recent policies aimed at making India an innovation hub are yielding tangible results. According to PM Modi, India’s Research and Development (R&D) expenditure has doubled over the last decade, and the number of registered patents has increased 17 times. He added that India is now the third-largest startup ecosystem globally, with over 6,000 deep-tech startups working in areas like clean energy and advanced materials.
PM Modi also underlined the significant growth of India’s semiconductor sector and the bio-economy, which has expanded from $10 billion in 2014 to approximately $140 billion today. He noted India’s advancements in green hydrogen, quantum computing, deep sea research, and critical minerals, highlighting the country’s growing presence in cutting-edge technologies.
The Prime Minister stressed that reforms have been implemented to ensure that innovative prototypes can move swiftly from lab to market, further strengthening the research and innovation ecosystem. He also spoke about the Anusandhan National Research Foundation, which aims to scale up research and innovation in Indian universities, and emphasized initiatives to promote private sector R&D.
In a major move to boost research, PM Modi launched the ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development, and Innovation Scheme Fund, designed to encourage a private sector-driven R&D ecosystem in India.
The event was attended by Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh, Principal Scientific Adviser Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Nobel Laureate Sir Andre Geim, and other dignitaries.
This initiative reinforces India’s position as a global hub for science, technology, and innovation, paving the way for sustainable growth in emerging sectors.
