PM Modi and Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi held Annual Summit talks in New Delhi, strengthening India-Japan ties in AI, defence, energy and trade.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday held the Annual Summit-level talks with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in New Delhi, marking a significant step in strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

During the high-level meeting, both sides exchanged multiple agreements across key sectors including economic cooperation, energy security, defence, artificial intelligence (AI), and pharmaceuticals. The summit provided a platform to review ongoing bilateral cooperation and discuss regional and global developments of mutual interest.

Focus on Trust, Technology, and Strategic Cooperation

Addressing a joint press interaction after the talks, PM Modi said that mutual trust remains the strongest pillar of India-Japan relations. He noted that both nations, as major global economies, share a common vision for a free, open, and stable Indo-Pacific region.

He emphasized that economic security and energy security are emerging as key priorities for both countries. According to him, technology collaboration will play the most important role in shaping the future of bilateral relations.

AI, Defence, and Energy Security Agreements

The leaders issued a joint statement on Artificial Intelligence, highlighting deeper cooperation in emerging technologies. PM Modi stated that Japan’s advanced precision technology combined with India’s strong software capabilities would significantly boost global AI development.

In the defence sector, both countries signed an agreement on their first-ever co-development project, marking a new phase in strategic cooperation.

On energy security, PM Modi announced the India-Japan Bio-gas Initiative, under which 1,000 biogas and organic fertiliser plants will be established in India. The initiative is expected to strengthen sustainability, rural livelihoods, and agricultural productivity.

Strong Economic and Strategic Alignment

The Prime Minister said that the economies of India and Japan are highly complementary, with shared values and similar approaches ranging from cultural traditions to modern innovation.

He highlighted that both nations have already identified key sectors for strategic collaboration, including semiconductors, critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, clean energy, and information and communication technology.

High-Level Engagement and Diplomatic Momentum

The Japanese Prime Minister’s visit to India marks her first official trip to the country. She was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan, where PM Modi was also present.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit represents an important milestone in further advancing bilateral ties. The India-Japan Annual Summit continues to serve as the key mechanism guiding the strategic direction of the partnership.

Both leaders also recalled their previous interactions at international forums, including the G7 Summit in France and the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, reflecting consistent high-level engagement between the two nations.

Future Outlook

With expanding cooperation in defence, energy, AI, and critical technologies, India and Japan are expected to further deepen their strategic partnership in the coming years, reinforcing their shared vision for regional peace, stability, and economic growth.
