The fifth day of the Punjab Assembly Monsoon Session ended on Friday with Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan adjourning the House until Monday. The day’s proceedings remained largely orderly, while the government introduced the Punjab School Fee Regulatory Bill, setting the stage for a detailed debate when the Assembly meets again.

Punjab Raises Concerns Over Students in Canada
During the Punjab Assembly Monsoon Session, Health Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh raised the issue of Punjabi students facing difficulties in Canada.
According to the minister, around 1,500 international students are currently protesting in Canada after facing problems related to work permits. He said many students had enrolled in colleges in 2024 after being informed that they would become eligible for work permits after completing their studies.
However, when they subsequently applied for permits, several applications were reportedly rejected. The minister said there were also concerns because some students from the same institution had received work permits, while others were allegedly not receiving proper consideration.
Dr. Ravjot Singh said the Punjab Government had approached the Central Government and requested a meeting to discuss the matter. He assured the affected students that the state government would provide all possible assistance, including legal support for those pursuing their cases in Canadian courts.
The minister also appealed to MPs of Punjabi origin to intervene and assist the students facing difficulties.
Speaker Warns MLAs Over Assembly Decorum
The fifth day of the Punjab Assembly Monsoon Session began with Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan reminding legislators to maintain discipline inside the House.
The Speaker intervened after some members were seen talking during the proceedings. He told the legislators that those wishing to continue their conversations could move to the room behind the House, stressing that the dignity and decorum of the Assembly must be maintained.
Congress MLAs Continue Protest
The opposition remained active during Friday’s proceedings. Congress legislators arrived wearing black scarves and continued their protest outside the Assembly for the third consecutive day.
With the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections approaching, the current Monsoon Session has gained additional political significance. Opposition parties have been seeking to put the Aam Aadmi Party-led government on the defensive over several issues.
The Congress has also stepped up its criticism, treating the session as an important opportunity to highlight issues ahead of the upcoming election campaign.

Several reports and legislative matters also came up during the Punjab Assembly Monsoon Session.
The annual accounts reports of the Punjab Khadi and Village Industries Board for 2020-21 and 2021-22 were presented before the House. Members also moved a proposal seeking immediate consideration and passage of the Punjab Common Infrastructure (Regulation and Maintenance) Amendment Bill, 2026.
These legislative proceedings added to the day’s business as the Assembly continued its scheduled discussions.
Pargat Singh Raises Freedom of Expression Issue
Congress MLA Pargat Singh raised concerns regarding freedom of expression and the role of the opposition in a democracy.
He argued that opposition parties should have sufficient freedom to present their views. Referring to alleged restrictions involving AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal’s social media account, Pargat Singh claimed that the BJP-led government was attempting to silence political opponents.
He also said opposition leaders should be permitted to meet Kejriwal and put forward their concerns, while alleging that the Punjab Government itself had attempted to suppress voices of dissent.
School Fee Bill to Take Centre Stage on Monday
The Punjab Assembly Monsoon Session will resume on Monday after the Speaker adjourned the House on Friday.
The Punjab School Fee Regulatory Bill is expected to be the major focus of the next sitting, with legislators set to undertake a detailed discussion on the proposed legislation.
The developments in the Assembly, along with the opposition’s continuing protests and concerns raised over Punjabi students in Canada, are likely to keep the political atmosphere active as Punjab moves closer to the 2027 Assembly elections.
