R Ashwin ruled out of Big Bash League 2025-26 due to a knee injury, delaying his maiden stint with Sydney Thunder. Read full details on squad updates and overseas players.
Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will miss the 2025-26 Big Bash League (BBL 15) due to a knee injury, delaying his much-anticipated debut in the Australian T20 league. Ashwin, who retired from Indian cricket and the IPL, had planned to begin his overseas T20 journey with the Sydney Thunder, but the injury has put those plans on hold.
Ashwin sustained the injury while preparing for the tournament in Chennai, requiring a medical procedure that will delay his full recovery. In a heartfelt message to Thunder fans, Ashwin expressed his disappointment but emphasized his focus on recovery.
“I’m gutted to miss BBL 15. My focus now is recovery and coming back stronger. I’m grateful to the Thunder family and the fans for the warmth they’ve already shown me,” Ashwin said. He also expressed his desire to travel to Australia later in the season to be with the team, even if he cannot play.

Sydney Thunder Management Reacts
Sydney Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland expressed disappointment at Ashwin’s injury but reassured fans that the team remains competitive.
“Everyone at Sydney Thunder was devastated to learn of Ash’s knee injury. While disappointing, we have built two championship-contending squads for BBL 15 and WBBL 11. We can’t wait to get back in front of our fans in Western Sydney for two massive campaigns,” Copeland said.
Thunder’s Overseas Players for BBL 15
With Ashwin sidelined, Sydney Thunder will rely on overseas stars Sam Billings (ENG), Lockie Ferguson (NZ), and Shadab Khan (PAK) to bolster their squad. Other notable players in the Thunder lineup include David Warner, Cameron Bancroft, Matthew Gilkes, Chris Green, and Tanveer Sangha.
The Thunder remain optimistic about their performance despite Ashwin’s absence, aiming to continue their progress from recent seasons in the Big Bash League. Ashwin, meanwhile, is focused on rehabilitation with hopes of joining the team later in the season.
