Delhi Capitals (DC) kickstarted their IPL 2026 campaign with a statement win against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), thanks to a career-defining performance from young sensation Sameer Rizvi. Coming in as an Impact Player, Rizvi’s composed yet aggressive unbeaten 70 proved why the franchise placed immense faith in his talent.
The Rescue Act: From 26/4 to Victory
Chasing a target of 142 at the Ekana Stadium, Delhi Capitals found themselves in a nightmare scenario. The top order collapsed under the pressure of LSG’s new-ball attack, reeling at 26/4 within the first five overs. Sameer Rizvi entered the fray at No. 4, a position usually reserved for seasoned veterans.
Instead of buckling, Rizvi showcased maturity beyond his 22 years. He partnered with the reliable Tristan Stubbs (39* off 32 balls) to orchestrate an unbroken 119-run stand. Rizvi’s match–winning 70 off just 47 balls included five boundaries and four towering sixes, dismantling the LSG bowling attack and sealing the six–wicket win with 17 balls to spare.

“The Coaches Backed Me”: Rizvi Reveals DC Strategy
Following the match, the uncapped batter credited the Delhi Capitals management for his clarity of role.
“Coaches told me before that you will play at No. 4 and we will back you. You just play your natural, positive game,” Rizvi shared.
He noted that his experience batting at No. 4 for Uttar Pradesh and in the UPT20 league helped him adapt quickly. Despite the tricky, swinging conditions, his plan was simple: respect the pacers and attack the spinners.
Match Highlights: LSG vs DC
The game was a roller-coaster that highlighted DC’s bowling depth and Rizvi’s batting prowess:
LSG’s Batting Struggle: LSG managed only 141 in 18.4 overs. T Natarajan and Lungi Ngidi were the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets each.
Tactical Gambles: LSG captain Rishabh Pant opened the batting, but the move failed as he was run out for 7.
The Rizvi Impact: Rizvi’s 70* is his second successive IPL fifty, dating back to his final game of the previous season.
