PM Narendra Modi accused Congress of dropping key stanzas of Vande Mataram in 1937, calling it the “seed of partition.” Speaking at the 150th-anniversary celebration, he said the national song remains a timeless symbol of India’s unity and strength.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Congress party, alleging that it had dropped key stanzas of India’s national song Vande Mataram in 1937 — a move he said “sowed the seeds of partition” and reflected a “divisive mindset” that continues to challenge the nation even today.
PM Modi was speaking at a grand event in New Delhi to mark the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, a year-long commemoration organized by the Ministry of Culture. The programme also saw the launch of a commemorative coin and a special postage stamp dedicated to the historic song written by Bankim Chandra Chatterji in 1875.
PM Modi: ‘Divisive Mindset Still a Challenge’
Calling Vande Mataram the “voice of India’s freedom movement”, Modi said it was the maha mantra that inspired generations of Indians to fight for independence.

“Unfortunately, in 1937, important stanzas of Vande Mataram — a part of its soul — were separated. This division sowed the seeds of partition. Today’s generation must know why this injustice was done to a national song that united the nation,” Modi said.
He warned that “the same divisive mindset” continues to pose a challenge to India’s unity and integrity.
‘India Knows How to Take the Form of Durga’
Highlighting the timeless relevance of the song, Modi referred to Operation Sindoor, saying, “When the enemy dared to attack our security and honour using terrorism, the world saw that India knows how to take the form of Durga.”
He added that Vande Mataram captures the spirit of India — a nation that respects peace but stands ready to defend its dignity and sovereignty.
‘Bankim Babu Revived India’s Lost Pride’
Reflecting on India’s colonial past, Modi said that when Bankim Chandra Chatterji composed Vande Mataram, the nation had fallen from its glorious past due to invasions and exploitation.
“Just a few centuries ago, India contributed nearly one-fourth of the global GDP. But by the time Vande Mataram was written, the country was struggling under colonial oppression. Yet, Bankim Babu envisioned a prosperous India and gave the clarion call — Vande Mataram!” the Prime Minister said.
He added that the song shattered the colonial narrative that India was inferior or incapable of self-rule, asserting instead a spirit of self-respect and resilience.
India Emerging in Its True Form
PM Modi noted that modern India is witnessing a resurgence of the same self-confidence that Vande Mataram once inspired.
“Today, India is emerging as a global leader — the fifth-largest economy, a hub of science and technology, and a voice for peace and progress in the world,” he said.
He credited the nation’s resurgence to its civilizational roots and cultural strength — the same spirit that Vande Mataram ignited 150 years ago.
