Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Shri Jual Oram, commended the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes for its proactive efforts, particularly in leveraging its Constitutional authority to implement and oversee the Forest Rights Act. Speaking at the Commission’s 22nd Foundation Day celebration, he highlighted its crucial role in safeguarding tribal rights.
Union Minister Shri Oram reaffirmed the commitment of the Tribal Ministry, in partnership with the Commission, to ensuring social justice, holistic development, and an improved quality of life for Scheduled Tribe communities. He also outlined key government initiatives benefiting tribal populations, including Eklavya Model Residential Schools, pre- and post-matric scholarships, and the National Overseas Scholarship. Furthermore, he spoke about the identification of 75 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) nationwide as part of a focused development strategy.
Speaking at the Foundation Day event, Union Minister Shri Antar Singh Arya, Chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, provided an overview of the Commission’s activities. He noted that since taking office, the current Commission has been actively engaging with Scheduled Tribe communities across the country.
Union Minister Shri Arya highlighted the successful execution of a 100-day action plan aimed at assessing the progress of various states, districts, and public sector undertakings. He underscored the Commission’s achievements and reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting the rights and fostering the development of Scheduled Tribes.
The event included addresses from Commission members Shri Nirupam Chakma, Dr. Asha Lakra, and Shri Jatothu Hussain, who shared their insights and experiences. Also in attendance were Shri Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, Chairperson of the National Commission for Backward Classes, and Shri Vaddepally Ramchander, Member of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes. The gathering was further graced by chairpersons, members, and secretaries of various national commissions, representatives of Scheduled Tribe communities, and university students.
During the inaugural session, Commission Secretary Shri Puneet Kumar Goel welcomed the attendees and provided an overview of the Commission’s key initiatives, notable achievements, and its overall functioning. Following this, multiple sessions were conducted focusing on the advancement, skill development, and entrepreneurial opportunities for tribal communities. Experts from the National Skill Development Corporation, academicians from Delhi University, and policymakers contributed their perspectives. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Commission’s Joint Secretary, Shri Amit Nirmal.
