Pakistan’s left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir ended his dramatic international career in December 2024, shortly after playing in the held in the USA and the Caribbean.
Now, months after stepping away from the international scene, Amir has finally opened up about the reason behind his unexpected retirement — a move that had left many surprised.
Mohammad Amir voiced his disappointment over the silence from the Pakistan Cricket Board after the 2024 T20 World Cup.
“Once the T20 World Cup was over, no one reached out to me. There was no clarity about whether I was in the team’s future plans or not. A smart person can read between the lines — when you’re not included, you have to make decisions for your own good,” he explained.
“That’s exactly what I did. I’ve made my decision — farewell, international cricket,” Amir stated.
Covered Costs Himself
Currently representing Quetta Gladiators in the 10th season of the Pakistan Super League, Amir revealed that he turned down a profitable county cricket contract to participate in the T20 World Cup. He added that he personally funded his fitness journey to stay match-ready.
“I gave up my county contract to play in the World Cup. To be honest, I spent more than I earned. I traveled with my trainer, and all expenses came from my own pocket — but that’s another story,” said the 33-year-old.
Early World Cup Exit
Pakistan’s campaign in the 2024 T20 World Cup ended in disappointment, as they failed to move past the group stage. Finishing below India and tournament co-hosts USA in Group A, they couldn’t secure a spot in the next round.
