Remembering the Brave on Police Commemoration Day
Police Commemoration Day, observed annually on October 21, honors the courage and sacrifice of police personnel who have laid down their lives protecting the nation. The day commemorates the tragic incident of October 21, 1959, when ten valiant policemen lost their lives during an ambush by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh.
The primary event takes place at the National Police Memorial in New Delhi, a symbol of pride, unity, and dedication for police forces across India. The Memorial, dedicated by the Prime Minister in 2018, features a 30-foot granite monolith called the Central Sculpture, representing the strength and selfless service of police personnel. It also includes the ‘Wall of Valour’ and a museum that showcases the history and evolution of policing in India.
Nationwide Tributes and Activities
Following Police Commemoration Day, from October 22 to 30, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Central Police Organizations (CPOs) conduct commemorative events at the National Police Memorial. These include family visits of fallen heroes, police band displays, motorcycle rallies, runs honoring fallen officers, blood donation camps, and competitions for children focusing on police bravery and sacrifice. Similar programs are also held by police forces across the country during this period.
The day serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by police personnel in safeguarding national security and maintaining law and order, reinforcing their commitment to protecting the nation at all costs.
