New Zealand wicketkeeper Tom Blundell ruled out of the remainder of the Christchurch Test and the second Test in Wellington against West Indies due to a hamstring injury. Mitchell Hay joins the squad as cover.
New Zealand cricket suffered a significant setback during the ongoing first Test against the West Indies, with wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell ruled out for the remainder of the Christchurch Test and the upcoming second Test in Wellington. Blundell, 35, sustained a tear in his right hamstring while batting on Day 1 at Hagley Oval, forcing him to miss Day 2 as captain Tom Latham donned the gloves.
Tom Blundell Injury Details
The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed the injury ahead of the third day’s play, stating:
“Tom Blundell sustained a tear to his right hamstring while batting on Day One of the first Test against the West Indies at Hagley Oval. He has been subsequently ruled out of the second Test at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, starting 10 December.”
In response to the injury, NZC has added Mitchell Hay to the squad, who will join the Black Caps in Wellington on December 7. Hay, who has featured in seven ODIs and 12 T20Is over the past year, could potentially make his Test debut unless Daryl Mitchell is fit or New Zealand adjusts their lineup by moving Will Young and Tom Latham.

Match Update: Christchurch Test
Despite Tom Blundell’s absence, New Zealand dominated the proceedings at Hagley Oval. The West Indies collapsed from 100/2 to 167 all out, with Jacob Duffy claiming his maiden five-wicket haul in just his second Test. Shai Hope was the lone standout performer for the visitors, as New Zealand secured a first-innings lead of 64 runs.
By the close of Day 2, openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway extended the lead to 96, putting the West Indies under significant pressure. With a seamer-friendly pitch, the visitors are unlikely to chase more than 250 in the fourth innings, giving the Black Caps a strong chance to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Implications of Blundell’s Absence
Tom Blundell’s absence is a major blow to New Zealand, particularly in terms of wicketkeeping and middle-order stability. The team will need to rely on Latham, Hay, and the bench strength to maintain momentum and secure a series advantage against the visiting side.
The second Test at the Basin Reserve now promises to be a crucial contest, with New Zealand looking to capitalize on their favorable position and continue their strong form against the West Indies.
