Delhi Assembly erupts during debate on Guru Tegh Bahadur’s martyrdom as Minister Pravesh Verma demands Atishi’s resignation and legal action.
New Delhi: A heated confrontation erupted in the Delhi Assembly during a discussion on the martyrdom of Sikh Guru Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur, triggering strong political reactions across the House. Cabinet Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh Verma demanded the resignation of Leader of Opposition Atishi, accusing her of making inappropriate remarks during the sensitive debate.
The controversy unfolded during the Delhi Assembly session on Tuesday when lawmakers were paying tribute to Guru Tegh Bahadur’s supreme sacrifice for religious freedom and human dignity. According to ruling party leaders, the solemn atmosphere was disrupted, leading to objections from several members of the House.
Ministers Seek Action Against Atishi
Following the incident, Minister Pravesh Verma, along with ministers Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravindra Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra, and MLA Abhay Verma, met the Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. The delegation formally requested the cancellation of Atishi’s legislative membership and the registration of an FIR against her, citing alleged disrespectful conduct.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Verma said the discussion centered on a subject of immense historical and emotional importance for the nation, particularly for the Sikh community. He claimed that Atishi neither participated constructively in the debate nor maintained the dignity expected inside the Delhi Assembly.
“Disrespect to a National Icon Is Unacceptable”
Verma emphasized that Guru Tegh Bahadur’s martyrdom symbolizes the defense of faith, liberty, and humanity. He stated that any behavior perceived as insulting toward such a revered figure cannot be tolerated on the floor of a democratic institution.
“The Speaker has taken this matter seriously. We have submitted a written complaint demanding strict action so that such incidents are not repeated in the future,” Verma added. He also urged for a time-bound inquiry to ensure accountability and uphold legislative discipline.
Allegations Spark Political Tension
The minister further alleged that the remarks attributed to Atishi hurt public sentiments and violated democratic norms. He said the written transcript of the alleged statements has been provided to the Speaker to enable a fact-based review.
Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, is remembered nationwide for sacrificing his life during the Mughal era to protect religious freedom. His legacy holds deep significance across communities in India.
As political tensions escalate over the incident, more debate and responses are expected in the coming days, potentially intensifying the standoff between the ruling party and the opposition inside the Delhi Assembly.
