India to receive ‘zero-duty’ facility from the US for textiles, boosting exports. Piyush Goyal assures 90–95% agricultural products remain protected, supporting farmers.
In a major boost for Indian exporters, the Ministry of Commerce has confirmed that India will now receive a ‘zero duty’ facility from the United States, similar to the one granted to Bangladesh. Union Minister Piyush Goyal clarified in Parliament that Indian textiles made from American cotton will not attract any tariffs, ensuring enhanced competitiveness in the global market. Furthermore, 90–95% of agricultural products are excluded from this arrangement, fully protecting Indian farmers’ interests.
Zero Duty Deal: What It Means for India
Indian textile manufacturers have long expressed concerns that the preferential treatment enjoyed by Bangladeshi exporters could put India at a disadvantage in the US market. Now, the Commerce Ministry has indicated that India will benefit from the same ‘zero-duty’ facility. This means that Indian cotton-based products exported to the US will not face any import duties under a reciprocal tariff framework, making Indian goods more competitive internationally.
“This step ensures Indian exporters can compete on equal footing with Bangladesh in the US market,” the ministry noted. The move is expected to eliminate uncertainties that previously hindered orders and export growth.

Parliamentary Discussion: Piyush Goyal vs Rahul Gandhi
The trade deal sparked a heated discussion in Parliament. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that Bangladesh received better terms compared to India in the agreement with the US. Responding firmly, Minister Piyush Goyal clarified that these claims were false. He emphasized, “The zero-tariff facility granted to Bangladesh for using American raw materials will equally be extended to India. There is no disparity between the two countries.”
Goyal also informed Parliament that the framework of the agreement is still being finalized, and once the interim deal is completed, all details will be made public.
Agricultural Protection: Safeguarding Farmers’ Interests
Addressing farmers’ concerns, Goyal confirmed that nearly 90–95% of India’s agricultural products are excluded from this agreement. This ensures that the domestic market will not be flooded with US agricultural imports, protecting local farmers and maintaining price stability.
The announcement comes after the US-Bangladesh joint statement on February 9, 2026, where the US announced a tariff reduction on Bangladeshi goods to 19% and zero-duty access for American cotton-based garments. India’s inclusion under similar terms now clears confusion and opens new opportunities for Indian businesses in the US.
Impact on Indian Textile Industry and Economy
Experts believe this move will give a significant boost to India’s textile industry, improving export volumes and global competitiveness. By eliminating tariff barriers, Indian manufacturers can better leverage the US market, attract larger orders, and strengthen India’s position as a leading textile exporter.
With 90–95% of agricultural products protected and zero duties on textiles, the government’s initiative is being hailed as a win-win for both Indian exporters and farmers, enhancing trade while safeguarding domestic interests.
