Curry Barker reacts to Obsession becoming a global hit, especially in India where it broke horror records with massive box office success.
Hollywood horror film Obsession has emerged as an unexpected global blockbuster, with its record-breaking performance in India leaving even its creator stunned. Director Curry Barker has admitted that the overwhelming response from Indian audiences was far beyond anything he anticipated.
Unexpected success in India
In a recent interview with Variety India, 26-year-old filmmaker Curry Barker spoke about the massive popularity of Obsession in India, where the film has reportedly earned over ₹78.60 crore net—making it the highest-grossing Western horror film in the country.
“I definitely did not expect Obsession to be a big hit in India. I didn’t expect it to be a big hit anywhere, really,” Barker said. “You hope and dream that your movie is successful and that it resonates with people. But I can’t believe what it’s doing.”
The filmmaker added that the film was created on a very limited budget and its global reception has been overwhelming. “We made this movie for nothing. I just can’t believe it’s getting the recognition that it’s getting,” he said.
From indie horror to global phenomenon
Made on a modest budget of around $750,000, Obsession has gone on to earn more than $250 million worldwide, turning into one of the biggest surprise hits of the year.
The psychological horror drama follows Bear, a lonely music store worker who becomes dangerously obsessed with his childhood friend Nikki. After using a mysterious object to make a wish that she would love him unconditionally, the story takes a dark turn exploring themes of control, emotional dependency, and toxic relationships.

The unsettling storyline—featuring Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette—has sparked widespread discussion among audiences across countries, including India, where the film has found a particularly strong fan base.
Concerns about Hollywood future
Following the film’s success, Barker is now attracting attention from major Hollywood studios. However, he says he is more focused on protecting his creative identity than worrying about industry pressure.
“I’m actually more nervous about myself than the studio system,” he explained. “I’m trying to cut out all the noise and remember what made my voice unique in the first place.”
He further emphasized that Obsession succeeded because it was made without external pressure. “I wasn’t making it for anybody else but myself. I don’t want the noise around the success to get to me,” he added.
About the film ‘Obsession’
Obsession explores the disturbing relationship between loneliness and desire, following Bear’s emotional downfall after a wish goes disastrously wrong. The film has been widely discussed for its portrayal of obsession, consent, and psychological manipulation.
