A serious workplace accident at Ahmedabad’s U.N. Mehta Hospital has raised concerns over worker safety after one employee died and two others were reported to be in critical condition during drainage-related work. Leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) visited the hospital and demanded strict action against those responsible for the incident.
According to information shared by AAP leaders, three housekeeping workers were allegedly sent inside a drainage line for cleaning work without proper safety equipment. The party claimed that the workers were exposed to dangerous conditions, leading to the death of one employee, while two others were admitted for emergency treatment.
AAP Gujarat leaders, including Dr. Karan Barot and Vinod Parmar, visited U.N. Mehta Hospital and met with the affected families. They demanded a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and called for accountability from both the contractor company and hospital authorities.
Dr. Karan Barot, AAP Gujarat’s state organisation secretary and chief spokesperson, questioned why housekeeping staff were assigned sewer and drainage cleaning work. He alleged that workers were pressured to enter the sewer tank despite the risks involved and claimed that some employees were threatened with job loss if they refused to perform the task.
Barot said that the safety of sanitation workers should be considered as important as the lives of doctors and other professionals. He urged authorities to take strict legal action against anyone who forced employees to carry out hazardous work without adequate protection.
He also demanded long-term financial support and proper compensation for the family of the deceased worker, including assistance for the worker’s wife and young daughter. According to him, the government and concerned agencies must ensure that the family does not face financial difficulties after the tragedy.

The AAP leader stated that the party’s team remained in contact with the affected workers and their families following the incident. He also mentioned that discussions were held with police officials regarding the matter and that an FIR had been registered based on preliminary information.
AAP leaders further questioned the absence of responsible officials from the hospital administration and contractor agency after the incident. They demanded that those found negligent should face strict action under the law.
Highlighting the broader issue of worker safety, Barot said that incidents involving sanitation workers entering sewer systems without protective equipment must stop. He called for stronger safety measures, mandatory protective gear, and strict enforcement of workplace safety rules to prevent similar accidents in the future.
The incident has brought renewed attention to the safety challenges faced by sanitation and housekeeping workers involved in hazardous cleaning operations. Authorities are expected to continue investigating the matter while demands for justice and improved safety standards remain ongoing.
