Barinder Goyal inaugurated a ₹1.90 crore minor canal in Moga, providing irrigation to 621 acres, and dedicated ₹16.92 crore irrigation projects.

Reinforcing its commitment to strengthening agricultural infrastructure, the Punjab Government has inaugurated a new irrigation project aimed at improving water availability for farmers. Cabinet Minister Barinder Goyal on Wednesday inaugurated a 6.16-kilometre-long minor canal in Jhandewala village of Moga district, constructed at a cost of ₹1.90 crore.

According to the government, the newly built minor canal will provide canal water for irrigation across 621 acres of agricultural land, helping farmers access a more reliable and sustainable source of water.

Major Boost to Irrigation Infrastructure

Speaking at the inauguration, Barinder Goyal said the project is part of the Punjab Government’s ongoing efforts to modernise irrigation facilities and improve agricultural productivity. He stated that expanding the canal network will reduce farmers’ dependence on groundwater while ensuring timely irrigation during the crop season.

The minister emphasized that strengthening irrigation infrastructure remains one of the government’s priorities to support the farming community and promote sustainable agriculture.

92 Kilometres of Kuhls and Pipelines Dedicated

In addition to inaugurating the minor canal, Barinder Goyal dedicated 92 kilometres of kuhls and irrigation pipelines, developed at a cost of ₹16.92 crore, to the public.

The upgraded network is expected to improve water distribution efficiency and ensure that canal water reaches more agricultural fields across the region.

Focus on Farmer Welfare

Barinder Goyal said the Bhagwant Mann-led government is consistently investing in projects that directly benefit farmers. He added that strengthening irrigation infrastructure will help improve crop yields, lower irrigation costs, and enhance long-term agricultural sustainability.

He also noted that better water management is essential for conserving groundwater and securing Punjab’s agricultural future.

Supporting Sustainable Agriculture

The minister highlighted that projects such as minor canals, kuhls, and pipeline networks are crucial for ensuring equitable water distribution and increasing the efficiency of irrigation systems.

With improved canal connectivity, farmers are expected to receive adequate irrigation support, enabling them to achieve better productivity while reducing pressure on tube wells.
