Murali Sreeshankar led India’s charge by comfortably qualifying for the men’s long jump final. The 27-year-old needed to clear the automatic qualification distance of eight metres and wasted no time in doing so. On his very first attempt, Sreeshankar produced a jump of 8.01 metres, sealing his place in the medal round without requiring any additional attempts.
The Indian star, who claimed a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, looked confident throughout the qualification round. India also celebrated success in the swimming pool as experienced swimmer Sajan Prakash advanced to the men’s 200m butterfly final. Prakash finished second in his qualifying heat with a composed performance that secured his place among the finalists.
Scotland’s Duncan Scott topped the heat with a time of 1:58.29, while Prakash comfortably qualified for the medal race. The Indian swimmer has described the current season as his final competitive campaign and is aiming to finish his international career on a high note.
At 32 years of age, Prakash continues to represent India at the highest level after qualifying for both the Commonwealth Games and the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. A podium finish in Glasgow would mark one of the biggest achievements of his career.
Tejas Shirse Books Spot in 110m Hurdles Final
India’s athletics campaign received another boost as Tejas Shirse qualified for the men’s 110m hurdles final despite facing a challenging race in the heats.
Shirse had a slow start and clipped the seventh hurdle during his run, but he recovered strongly in the closing stages to finish third in Heat 1 with a time of 13.76 seconds. His determined finish was enough to secure qualification for the final.
