Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convener Arvind Kejriwal has sharply criticised the Central Government over its implementation of the E-20 petrol policy, alleging that automobile manufacturers are under pressure not to publicly raise concerns about its impact on older vehicles.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Kejriwal claimed that vehicles manufactured before 2023 could face technical issues if E-20 petrol is widely adopted, and urged the government to reconsider the policy.
Kejriwal Says Automakers Fear Speaking Publicly
Arvind Kejriwal said he had written to 29 automobile companies seeking clarification on whether pre-2023 vehicles were fully compatible with E-20 fuel. He also asked whether companies would compensate vehicle owners if engines were damaged or fuel efficiency declined.
According to Arvind Kejriwal , while no company responded officially, several industry representatives privately expressed concerns about the compatibility of older vehicles with E-20 fuel. He alleged that manufacturers were reluctant to speak publicly because they feared action against their businesses.
These claims have not been independently verified, and the automobile companies mentioned have not publicly responded to the allegations.
Claims Millions of Older Vehicles Could Be Impacted
The AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal asserted that nearly 300 million vehicles manufactured before 2023 could potentially be affected by the E-20 fuel rollout.
He argued that the policy may increase maintenance costs for vehicle owners and called on the government to provide greater transparency regarding technical compatibility and consumer safeguards.
Questions Raised Over Ethanol Blending Policy
Kejriwal also questioned the broader benefits of ethanol-blended fuel, stating that the government should hold wider consultations with experts, vehicle manufacturers and consumers before enforcing large-scale implementation.
He further alleged that a proposed public discussion on the issue faced administrative hurdles, claiming permission for the event was withdrawn.
Calls for Review of the Policy
Urging the Centre to revisit the E-20 rollout, Kejriwal said the government should address public concerns before expecting vehicle owners to transition.
He maintained that policies affecting millions of motorists should be backed by clear technical evidence and public awareness.
Other Issues Raised During Press Conference
Apart from the E-20 issue, Kejriwal criticised the current administration over infrastructure challenges, including urban waterlogging, and questioned the implementation of certain welfare schemes.
He also commented on eligibility conditions under the Lakshmi Yojana, claiming that only a limited number of beneficiaries may qualify under the existing criteria.
The Central Government has consistently maintained that the E-20 fuel programme is part of India’s long-term strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, increase ethanol production, and support cleaner fuel initiatives.
