Uttarakhand SIR row intensifies as CM Pushkar Singh Dhami hits back at Congress and questions voting rights for alleged infiltrators.
The political debate over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has intensified in Uttarakhand. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has criticised the Congress over its objections to the voter-list revision exercise, arguing that there is no reason to oppose efforts aimed at making electoral rolls more accurate and organised.
Speaking on the issue, Dhami said the Uttarakhand SIR exercise is not being conducted for the first time. He pointed out that similar voter-list revision exercises have been undertaken in the country earlier as well and questioned why objections were not raised on those occasions.

Dhami Questions Congress’ Opposition to SIR
The Chief Minister said the Uttarakhand SIR process is being carried out according to the prescribed procedure. According to Dhami, the purpose of reviewing electoral rolls is to identify discrepancies and ensure that the voter list remains accurate.
He argued that electoral rolls should not contain duplicate or incorrect entries. If an individual is registered as a voter at more than one location, it can create complications in the electoral process. Dhami said such discrepancies need to be identified and corrected.
‘Should Infiltrators Have the Right to Vote?’
While responding to criticism over the voter-list revision exercise, Dhami raised a pointed question: should infiltrators be given the right to vote?
The Chief Minister maintained that voting rights should be exercised only by people who are legally eligible to participate in elections. He also stressed the importance of removing irregularities from electoral rolls to protect the integrity of the voting process.
The Uttarakhand SIR debate has therefore become a major political issue, with the ruling side defending the revision exercise while the opposition continues to raise concerns over the process.
Dhami Says Clean Voter Lists Are Essential
Dhami said there should be no objection if electoral rolls are being verified, organised and corrected. He suggested that opposition to the exercise could raise questions about the reasons behind such resistance.
According to the Chief Minister, maintaining an accurate voter list is an important part of ensuring a fair and orderly election. The Uttarakhand SIR exercise, he said, should be viewed in the context of strengthening the electoral system rather than as a political controversy.
Elections Will Follow Constitutional Rules
Dhami further asserted that the country’s electoral system will function according to the Constitution and established rules. He said all election-related procedures will be conducted within the framework of the law.
The Chief Minister has previously defended the Election Commission’s voter-list revision exercise as well. He reiterated that electoral procedures must remain aligned with constitutional provisions and the established electoral framework.
The Uttarakhand SIR issue continues to draw political reactions, with Congress questioning aspects of the revision process and Dhami defending it as a necessary step to improve the accuracy and reliability of electoral rolls.
