AAP’s Saurabh Bhardwaj criticises Delhi Lakshmi Yojana eligibility rules, alleging most women may not qualify for the ₹2,500 monthly benefit.

A fresh political confrontation has emerged in Delhi over the newly approved Delhi Lakshmi Yojana, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alleging that the eligibility conditions are too restrictive for most women to qualify for the scheme.

Delhi AAP President Saurabh Bhardwaj accused the BJP-led Delhi government of creating eligibility rules that would prevent a large section of women from receiving the promised monthly financial assistance of ₹2,500.

Saurabh Bhardwaj Targets BJP Government

Addressing a press conference, Bhardwaj claimed that the eligibility criteria were approved by the Delhi Cabinet and were not merely administrative decisions.

According to him, the BJP had assured voters before the Delhi Assembly elections that every eligible woman would receive ₹2,500 per month. However, he alleged that the final conditions attached to the scheme are so stringent that very few beneficiaries would qualify.

The AAP leader also questioned the government’s intent, alleging that the eligibility norms have been framed in a way that significantly limits access to the financial assistance.

Delhi Government Defends the Scheme

The criticism comes shortly after the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) announced the formal approval of the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana, describing it as the fulfilment of a major public commitment.

According to the CMO, the scheme has been introduced under a budget allocation of ₹5,100 crore and is aimed at providing ₹2,500 per month through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to eligible women in the national capital.

The government said the initiative reflects its commitment to strengthening women’s financial security and empowering Nari Shakti through direct income support.

Scheme to Begin from August 1

The Delhi government has announced that the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana will come into effect from August 1. Eligible beneficiaries will receive the monthly financial assistance directly into their bank accounts through the DBT system.

Officials have stated that the scheme is designed to provide financial support to eligible women while ensuring transparent and efficient fund transfers.

The launch of the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana has quickly become a political issue, with the AAP questioning the implementation framework and the BJP maintaining that it has fulfilled its promise by approving the scheme and allocating the required funds.
