Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar tragically lost his life on Wednesday morning when his aircraft crash-landed in Baramati. The incident claimed the lives of five people on board, including the deputy CM.

According to preliminary reports, the aircraft suffered technical difficulties during its final approach to Baramati airport. A combination of heavy fog and the hilly terrain in the area may have contributed to the crash. The aircraft, identified as a Learjet VT-SSK, had taken off from Mumbai around 8:10 AM, and the Air Traffic Control received alerts about the crash at 9:12 AM.

Footage circulating on social media shows the wreckage engulfed in flames, highlighting the severity of the incident. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that no one survived the crash, and all onboard—including two personnel and two crew members—were killed.

Ajit Pawar was reportedly traveling to Baramati to address public meetings as part of the campaign for the February 5 Zilla Parishad elections in Maharashtra.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed shock over the incident, calling Pawar a “leader of the people” and offering condolences to his family. PM Modi tweeted that Pawar’s work in empowering the underprivileged and his dedication to public service would be remembered.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde described the crash as “an unfortunate day for Maharashtra,” recalling his time working alongside Pawar. Shinde highlighted the NCP leader’s contribution to initiatives like the Ladli Behen Yojana, emphasizing his commitment to social welfare and governance.

Authorities are expected to release a formal statement after rescue and verification operations are completed, including confirmation of identities and casualties.

This tragic incident has left Maharashtra and the political community in deep shock, with leaders and citizens mourning the untimely death of one of the state’s prominent leaders.
