The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sharply criticised Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy, particularly his reference to the Prime Minister’s public embraces with foreign leaders.
Gandhi made the comments while speaking at the Rachnatmak Congress National Convention, where he took a jibe at the government’s approach to diplomacy. He also criticised the BJP-RSS and described them in disparaging terms.
The remarks triggered a strong response from several BJP leaders, who accused Gandhi of crossing the boundaries of political discourse and questioned whether his statements were appropriate for someone holding the constitutional position of Leader of Opposition.
Pralhad Joshi Tells Rahul Gandhi to ‘Grow Up’
Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi launched a direct attack on Gandhi, asking him when he would demonstrate greater political maturity.
Joshi argued that running the country requires responsible leadership and said Gandhi’s comments about the elected government were evidence, in his view, of a lack of seriousness.
The Union minister also defended PM Modi’s democratic mandate and alleged that Gandhi’s criticism of the Prime Minister amounted to disrespect towards the people who elected him.
Joshi further contrasted PM Modi’s political journey with what he described as the Congress leadership’s history of dynastic politics.

BJP Objects to Gandhi’s Remarks on Foreign Policy
Rahul Gandhi’s criticism centred on what he portrayed as an over-reliance on symbolic gestures in India’s engagement with other countries.
During his address, Gandhi reportedly demonstrated his point by embracing Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit on stage. The exchange also included a reference to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, after which the Congress leader continued with the joke.
The BJP said such remarks were inappropriate and accused Gandhi of reducing a serious subject like foreign policy to political mockery.
Giriraj Singh Questions Gandhi’s Conduct
Union Minister Giriraj Singh also criticised the Congress leader, describing his behaviour as unacceptable and calling for intervention from his family.
His comments added to the BJP’s broader criticism of Gandhi’s remarks, with the party arguing that political disagreements should not result in personal or derogatory attacks.
Bansuri Swaraj Defends Dignity of Leader of Opposition’s Office
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj said Gandhi’s choice of language was inconsistent with the dignity expected from the Leader of Opposition.
She argued that the country needs an opposition that provides constructive criticism and engages with the government on substantive issues rather than relying on remarks designed primarily for social media attention.
Sukanta Majumdar Calls Remarks a New Low
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar also condemned the comments, particularly the references involving PM Modi and Giorgia Meloni.
Majumdar described the episode as a decline in the standard of public political discourse and criticised Congress leaders for participating in the exchange.
Political War of Words Intensifies
The controversy has once again highlighted the sharp political divide between the BJP and Congress. While Rahul Gandhi used the episode to question the government’s approach to foreign policy and mock what he sees as symbolic diplomacy, BJP leaders have focused on the language and manner in which the criticism was delivered.
