In a major move to protect electricity consumers, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken a tough stand on the rising number of Smart Meter complaints. During a high-level review meeting on Thursday, the CM directed the formation of a specialist committee to investigate technical glitches and overbilling issues. He emphasized that the common consumer is inherently honest and should not face harassment due to technical errors.
High-Level Probe into Smart Meter Complaints
The Chief Minister has taken serious note of the technical discrepancies reported by users across the state. CM Yogi Adityanath stated that providing transparent and uninterrupted power supply is the government’s top priority. He ordered that a dedicated committee of experts be formed to specifically look into Smart Meter complaints and ensure that the billing system is error-free.
“Do Not Disconnect Lines Without Valid Reason”
Addressing the officials, CM Yogi sent a clear message regarding consumer rights. He noted that if a consumer receives a correct bill, they never hesitate to pay. Therefore, strictly focusing on Smart Meter complaints, he ordered that no power connection should be disconnected unless there is a genuine fault or intentional default. The Chief Minister also instructed the Vigilance department to ensure that their actions do not cause unnecessary distress to the general public.

Rural Electrification: Power supply must reach small hamlets (Majras) with at least five houses, and the PM Kusum Yojana should be promoted aggressively.
Improving Ratings and Reforms
While acknowledging that the national ratings of Uttar Pradesh Discoms have improved, the CM stressed the need for continuous reforms to eliminate Smart Meter complaints entirely. He also fast-tracked the work on separating agricultural feeders to provide dedicated power supply to farmers.
The Chief Minister’s proactive approach to resolving Smart Meter complaints is expected to bring significant relief to millions of households in Uttar Pradesh, ensuring that the transition to modern technology does not come at the cost of consumer trust.
