AAP MLA Gopal Italia visited Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, paid tribute to martyrs and criticised the SIR process and CEC Act 2023.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Visavadar, Gopal Italia, visited Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab, and paid tribute to the people who lost their lives in the 1919 massacre. During a video message recorded during the visit, Italia recalled the historical tragedy and compared the restrictions faced by protesters in the past with the current political situation in Delhi. He also raised concerns about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) appointment law enacted in 2023.
The Gopal Italia Jallianwala Bagh visit has brought attention to his criticism of the BJP-led government and his appeal to citizens to protect democratic rights through peaceful protest.
Gopal Italia Remembers the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre
During his visit, Gopal Italia spoke about the events of April 13, 1919, when British troops under Brigadier General Reginald Dyer opened fire on a gathering at Jallianwala Bagh. The gathering included people protesting against British colonial policies, including the Rowlatt Act, which allowed detention without trial under specified conditions.
Italia said thousands of people had assembled at the site to oppose the law. He pointed to the bullet marks preserved on the walls and paid homage to those who died in the massacre.
Recalling the sacrifices of the martyrs, the AAP MLA said their courage should inspire people to stand up for their rights. He connected the historical episode with the recent demonstrations in Delhi, alleging that protesters were facing force when raising concerns about democratic issues.
The Gopal Italia Jallianwala Bagh visit was therefore not limited to a tribute to the martyrs; it also became an occasion for him to express his views on the right to dissent and the treatment of protesters.
AAP MLA Compares Delhi Protests With Colonial-Era Repression
In his video message, Italia criticised the handling of recent protests in Delhi. Drawing a comparison with General Dyer, he alleged that the use or threat of force against demonstrators reflected an attempt to suppress public dissent.
He argued that peaceful protest is an important democratic right, particularly when citizens believe their constitutional rights are under threat. He urged people to remember the sacrifices made during India’s freedom struggle and to remain committed to protecting democratic values.
Italia also made sharp political remarks against the BJP-led government, comparing those in power today with the British colonial rulers. These were his political allegations and comparisons, rather than established findings about the government’s conduct.
The MLA called on people in Gujarat to take inspiration from the freedom fighters and raise their voices against policies they believe are unfair.
Gopal Italia Questions the SIR Electoral Roll Revision
Another major issue raised by Italia was the Special Intensive Revision, commonly known as SIR, of electoral rolls. He criticised the exercise and claimed that around 130 million names had been removed from voter lists.
The AAP leader argued that changes to electoral rolls must be transparent and should not deprive eligible citizens of their voting rights. He also referred to an announcement that people could apply to have their names added to the voter list.
Italia questioned whether the process adequately addressed the concerns of people whose names had been removed. His comments reflect the wider political debate surrounding electoral roll revisions, voter eligibility and the need to ensure that eligible citizens can exercise their franchise.
The Gopal Italia Jallianwala Bagh visit also brought renewed attention to the opposition’s criticism of SIR, with the MLA linking the issue to his broader argument about protecting democratic rights.
CEC Act 2023: Italia Criticises the Appointment Process
Italia also criticised the law governing the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and other election commissioners. He said the BJP government had changed the selection framework in 2023, reducing the role of the judiciary in the selection committee.
Under the 2023 law, the selection committee comprises the Prime Minister, a Union Cabinet Minister nominated by the Prime Minister, and the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha or the leader of the largest opposition party in that House, as applicable. The Chief Justice of India is not a member of this committee.
Before the change, a Supreme Court judgment had directed that appointments be made through a committee comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition and the Chief Justice of India, pending legislation by Parliament.
Italia alleged that the revised arrangement gave the government greater influence over appointments. He questioned whether the system ensured sufficient independence for election authorities and called for changes to the law.

His criticism forms part of the broader political debate about the autonomy of the Election Commission of India and the balance of power in selecting its senior officials.
Italia Calls for Protection of Democratic Rights
The AAP MLA maintained that protests are not unusual in a democracy and said citizens should be able to demonstrate peacefully when they believe their rights are being threatened.
Referring again to the freedom struggle, Italia urged people to draw courage from the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh. He appealed particularly to the people of Gujarat to remain aware of their democratic rights and participate in public life.
His remarks linked three major themes: remembering the victims of British colonial rule, opposing what he considers unfair electoral policies, and defending the right to peaceful protest.
The Gopal Italia Jallianwala Bagh visit has consequently become a platform for his criticism of the SIR exercise and the 2023 CEC appointment law, alongside his tribute to India’s freedom fighters.
Political Debate Over SIR and Election Commission Continues
Electoral roll revisions and the appointment process for election commissioners remain subjects of political discussion. While opposition leaders have raised concerns about transparency and institutional independence, the legal framework and the implementation of electoral procedures continue to shape the debate.
Italia’s visit to Jallianwala Bagh combined a historical tribute with a political message directed at the BJP-led government. He urged citizens to learn from the sacrifices of the martyrs and to stand up for their rights through democratic means.
Through his statements, Gopal Italia Jallianwala Bagh visit has drawn attention to the continuing disagreement over SIR, the CEC Act 2023 and the role of peaceful protest in a democracy.
