Harbhajan Singh ETO accused Congress of politicising Gulzar Singh’s death and recalled Punjab’s painful memories of the 1984 anti-Sikh violence.

Punjab Cabinet Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Harbhajan Singh ETO has accused the Congress party of attempting to gain political mileage from the death of Gulzar Singh. He urged Congress leaders, including Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, to refrain from “politics over dead bodies” and allow the ongoing legal process to proceed.

In his statement, Harbhajan Singh ETO described Gulzar Singh’s death as a deeply painful incident and said the Punjab Government had already initiated action in the matter. According to the minister, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to conduct a detailed probe, while five people have been booked under provisions related to abetment to suicide and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

ETO Accuses Congress of Political Opportunism

The minister alleged that Congress leaders were attempting to turn the tragedy into a political issue instead of allowing the bereaved family time to cope with its loss.

Harbhajan Singh ETO said political leaders should exercise sensitivity when dealing with a death and allow the law to take its course. He argued that the government’s decision to constitute an SIT and register a case demonstrates that the matter is already being investigated through the appropriate legal channels.

1984 Remains a Sensitive Issue in Punjab

The AAP leader also attacked Congress over its historical record, particularly the anti-Sikh violence of 1984. He said people in Punjab continue to remember the killings of innocent people and the political controversies surrounding Congress leaders associated with that period.

He referred to former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, who was convicted in cases related to the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, while arguing that Congress leaders should be cautious about questioning others on issues of sensitivity and justice.

Raja Warring Remarks on Buta Singh Also Raised

Harbhajan Singh ETO also questioned Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring over remarks he alleged were made against the late Sardar Buta Singh, a prominent Dalit leader from Punjab who served as Union Home Minister.

ETO claimed that an FIR was registered over those remarks and that the National Commission for Scheduled Castes subsequently directed the Punjab Police to take action. He questioned how Congress could raise concerns about Dalit dignity while facing allegations over remarks concerning a respected Dalit leader.

The minister further asked where Congress leaders’ concern for Dalits was when the alleged remarks against Buta Singh were made and reiterated his criticism of the party’s approach to the Gulzar Singh case.

“Punjab Remembers Everything,” Says ETO

Harbhajan Singh ETO alleged that Congress leaders were using the tragedy for political purposes and said the grieving family should be given adequate time and space to recover from its loss.

He also criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Raja Warring, alleging that both were attempting to use the death as a political issue.

Concluding his statement, Harbhajan Singh ETO said the people of Punjab had rejected politics based on fear, communal division and the exploitation of human tragedies. He maintained that the death of a poor Dalit worker should not be used as a means to advance political ambitions and reiterated that the government would allow the law to take its course.
