India and Japan to celebrate 75 years of ties in 2027 with cricket, anime, culture, business events, and youth exchange programmes.
India and Japan are set to celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in a grand and multi-dimensional manner, with 2027 designated as the “India-Japan Year of Shared Horizons.” The celebrations will include sporting events, cultural collaborations, youth exchanges, business linkages, and creative industry partnerships aimed at strengthening the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between the two nations.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), highlighting that both countries will jointly organise year-long commemorative programmes across multiple sectors with active participation from youth, artists, entrepreneurs, and policymakers.
At the centre of the celebrations will be a series of high-profile events including a friendship cricket match, cultural festivals, anime and manga collaborations, and business networking initiatives designed to deepen people-to-people ties.
Leaders, including Narendra Modi and Japanese leadership, discussed the importance of the milestone during recent diplomatic engagements, reaffirming their commitment to expanding cooperation in defence, trade, science, education, and cultural exchange.
Cricket, Anime and Youth Engagement Take Centre Stage
In a unique initiative, cricket will be used as a symbol of friendship between the two nations. A special India-Japan friendship cricket match is planned during the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026, serving as a curtain-raiser to the anniversary celebrations.
Under the programme titled “Cricket Kizuna-75,” Indian coaches will also travel to Japan to train emerging cricketers, helping strengthen sporting collaboration at the grassroots level.
Recognising the growing popularity of Japanese anime, manga, and gaming in India, the initiative IMAGE-75 will encourage co-creation in animation, gaming, comics, and immersive digital technologies, opening new opportunities for youth engagement and creative industries.

Cultural and Spiritual Exchange Programmes
The MEA has also announced RASA-75, a year-long cultural initiative that will showcase performing arts, visual traditions, and heritage exchanges between India and Japan. The programme aims to bring together artists, cultural institutions, and young creators from both countries.
A special Buddhist delegation from Japan will visit key spiritual sites in India, highlighting the deep civilisational and religious connections shared by the two nations and promoting Buddhist tourism.
Business, Innovation and Academic Collaboration
To strengthen economic ties, the Business Connect-75 initiative will connect Indian business clusters with Japanese regional banks and enterprises. The programme will include roadshows, industry roundtables, and curated networking events aimed at boosting trade and investment.
Additionally, an Ideathon featuring students and academics from both countries will be organised to generate policy ideas and innovative solutions for future cooperation.
India-Japan Week and Nationwide Celebrations
The week of April 28, 2027 will be observed as India–Japan Week, marking the formal establishment of diplomatic relations. Throughout the year, celebrations will be held across both countries, focusing on youth participation and cultural outreach.
The partnership between India and Japan, elevated over the years from a Global Partnership in 2000 to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014, continues to expand across political, defence, economic, technological, and cultural domains.
With the upcoming platinum jubilee celebrations, both nations aim to reinforce their shared vision of a peaceful, prosperous, and innovation-driven future.
