Karan Wahi Says Modern Dating Has Changed, Compares Today’s Women to His Mother’s Generation
Actor and television host Karan Wahi has found himself at the centre of a social media storm after a clip from his podcast conversation with actor Chhavi Mittal went viral. In the discussion, Karan Wahi opened up about his fears around modern relationships, dating culture and marriage, but it was his comparison between women today and his mother’s generation that divided the internet.
During the podcast, Karan Wahi repeatedly clarified that he was sharing his personal experiences rather than making a blanket statement about all men or women. However, several of his remarks quickly sparked criticism, with many social media users calling his views outdated, while others argued that he was merely expressing an opinion based on his own life.
Explaining why relationships feel more complicated today, Karan Wahi said that the abundance of choices has changed people’s approach towards commitment.
“As a man I feel more scared, because I feel I’ll be the person giving more, I’ll be more loyal… I’m not saying all women are bad or all men are good. But some women have taken the concept of independence in a very different way.”
Drawing a comparison with his mother, Karan Wahi recalled how disagreements were handled differently in the past.
“Earlier, if my mother didn’t like something, she would quietly deal with it in her own way and then move on.”
He contrasted that with what he believes is a more confrontational approach adopted by some people today, adding that changing relationship dynamics have made him more cautious about long-term commitment.
Karan Wahi Recalls Dating Experience, Says ‘Where Will You Stop?’ After Learning Woman Was Seeing Seven People
One of the most talked-about moments from the podcast came when Karan Wahi narrated an incident from his dating life.
The actor revealed that there was a time when he had the opportunity to go on dates with more than one person but consciously chose not to because he did not want to complicate things.
According to Karan Wahi, he later discovered that the woman he had gone out with was simultaneously dating several other people.
“I went out on a date with a girl… I made sure I don’t go on another date because I didn’t want to get confused. Later I realised the woman I went on a date with was going on dates with seven people. I was like, ‘Theek hai.’ I’m not judging you, but where will you stop?”
The actor also spoke about what he sees as different societal expectations for men and women.
He said boys are generally raised believing they must earn and financially support their families, whereas women, according to him, still have the option of choosing to become homemakers.
“Even today, I can’t tell my father that I don’t want to work. A girl can probably say she wants to be a housewife, but if I say I want to be a house husband, people will think I’ve gone mad.”
Towards the end of the conversation, Karan Wahi linked his concerns about relationships to the increasing number of divorces he has witnessed among people he knows personally.
He claimed that many of his male friends who got divorced had separated after their spouses found someone else, adding that such experiences have made him more apprehensive about marriage.
Karan Wahi Faces Reddit Backlash as Netizens Call Remarks ‘Regressive’ and ‘Misogynistic’
While Karan Wahi maintained that he was speaking from personal experience and not judging women, the viral clip received a very different reaction online.
The discussion quickly spread across Reddit and other social media platforms, where many users accused the actor of holding women to different standards than men.
Several users argued that Karan Wahi’s comparison with his mother’s generation ignored the realities many women faced in earlier decades, where remaining silent in unhappy relationships was often driven by social and financial pressures rather than personal choice.
Others also questioned his comments about the woman dating multiple people.
One Reddit user wrote that although Karan Wahi claimed he was “not judging,” his remarks came across as exactly that. Another commented that expecting women to remain patient and accommodating simply because previous generations did so reflected an outdated mindset.
A third user questioned his remarks on independence, asking, “How independent is ‘too independent’ for him? And what’s wrong with that? Aren’t men independent too?”
At the same time, some social media users defended Karan Wahi, saying the actor was speaking about his own experiences and that individual opinions on dating should not automatically be viewed as attacks on an entire gender.
As clips from the podcast continue circulating online, Karan Wahi’s remarks have evolved into a much larger conversation—not just about dating and marriage, but also about changing gender roles, expectations in modern relationships and where people draw the line between personal opinion and public accountability.
