A day after leaving the BJP, former Union minister Birender Singh and his ex-MLA spouse Prem Lata joined the Congress on Tuesday.
Nearly a month had passed since his son Brijender Singh became a member of the esteemed party.
The farmer politician Sir Chhotu Ram’s maternal grandson, Birender Singh (78), left the Congress in 2014 after more than four decades to join the BJP.
During the first government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he served as the Union minister for steel. In addition, he was in charge of panchayati raj, drinking water, and sanitation in rural areas.
In the presence of state party chairman Udai Bhan, leader of the opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda, and party leaders Kiran Chaudhary, Kumari Selja, and Randeep Singh Surjewala, Birender Singh became a member of the Congress.

Birender declared, “It is not just my ‘ghar wapsi,’ but also ‘vichar wapsi,'” upon his return to the Congress.
“With their joining, I am sure the Congress will be strengthened in Haryana and help form the Congress government in the state,” said party leader Mukul Wasnik, extending his welcome to Birender and Prem Lata.
“With his (Birender Singh) rejoining, he has proved the age-old saying, ‘East or West, Home is the best,'” stated former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. He is my older brother, and I’m thrilled to see him back in the Congress family.
“We can only preserve democracy and the Constitution if we demonstrate unity, which will strengthen our position,” Hooda declared.
