Features of Kapurthala Medical College
The Kapurthala Medical College will be built at a cost of ₹275 crore and will include a 300-bed hospital, providing both secondary and tertiary healthcare services. The college will admit 100 MBBS students annually, increasing medical education capacity in the state and reducing the need for students to pursue costly education abroad.
Dr Balbir Singh emphasised the dual impact of the project, stating, “The Kapurthala Medical College will not only add 100 MBBS seats but also generate large-scale employment. Over 1,000 people will benefit directly, while thousands will get indirect employment through associated services and infrastructure development.”
Strengthening Regional Healthcare
In addition to the new medical college, the Bhagwant Mann government plans to upgrade the Government Hospital in Sultanpur Lodhi into an urban centre and the Government Hospital in Begowal into a rural centre, both of which will be attached to the Kapurthala Medical College.
The project, spanning more than 5 lakh square feet, will feature six major operation theatres, a 500-capacity auditorium, modern diagnostic facilities including MRI and CT scans, a central lab, a blood bank, and advanced teaching departments with skill labs and museums.
Government’s Commitment to Public Healthcare
Dr Balbir Singh concluded, “The establishment of Kapurthala Medical College is a major step in fulfilling CM Bhagwant Mann’s vision of transforming Punjab’s healthcare and medical education. This institute will serve as a hub of medical excellence and provide world-class healthcare services to the people of the region.”
With this announcement, the Mann government demonstrates a strong commitment to public healthcare, large-scale employment generation, and enhancing medical education opportunities in Punjab.
