PM Modi shares his outlook on age, saying “25 years still left” after turning 75 during Pariksha Pe Charcha. Clarifies retirement speculation and highlights long-term vision for a developed India.
During the recent Pariksha Pe Charcha programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed questions regarding his age, reflecting on his 75th birthday and clarifying his perspective on leadership and retirement. Speaking to students, the PM shared a personal anecdote, saying, “A leader called me on my birthday and said, ‘You have completed 75 years.’ I replied, ‘25 are still remaining.’” He added, “I don’t count the years that have passed; I count the years that are still left.”
Modi’s remarks come amid widespread speculation surrounding his age milestone. Turning 75 on September 17, 2025, the Prime Minister’s birthday had sparked debates about retirement conventions within the BJP. The party has historically maintained a retirement practice at 75, but several exceptions and clarifications over the years have made the rule ambiguous.

The discussion gained attention after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, speaking at a book launch in Nagpur earlier in July 2025, referenced a witticism by senior RSS ideologue Moropant Pingle, suggesting that society often signals retirement after turning 75. This led to political speculation, with opposition leaders claiming that Modi should follow the same rule he once enforced on other senior leaders like LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, and Jaswant Singh. Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi and Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut criticized the perceived inconsistency, arguing that preaching without practice undermines credibility.
BJP leaders, however, have consistently dismissed such claims. Union Home Minister Amit Shah clarified in 2023 that there is no retirement clause in the BJP constitution, emphasizing that Modi would continue to lead the party and the NDA government until 2029. Union Minister Rajnath Singh reinforced this, noting that the 75-year retirement convention was never formalized in party documents. Later, Bhagwat also clarified that his Nagpur remarks were merely a humorous reference to Pingle’s observation, not a directive.
Prime Minister Modi, who will be 79 by the end of his current term, continues to focus on his long-term vision for India, setting 2047 as the target year to achieve a Viksit Bharat (developed India). His comments during Pariksha Pe Charcha underline his outlook on leadership: emphasizing the work that remains, rather than the years already completed.
