PM Modi reaffirms Act East, Act Fast policy in Gangtok. Discover how Rs 4,000 crore in projects and new rail links are transforming Sikkim’s growth and tourism.
Marking a historic milestone in the Himalayan state, Prime Minister PM Modi on Tuesday reaffirmed the Union Government’s unwavering commitment to the “Act East and Act Fast” policy. Addressing the 50th Year of Statehood celebrations in Gangtok, the Prime Minister emphasized that Sikkim and the Northeast are the “Ashtalakshmi” of India, serving as vital pillars for the nation’s future progress.
A New Era of Infrastructure and Connectivity
During the event, PM Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for a massive array of development projects valued at over Rs 4,000 crore. He highlighted that under his administration, long-pending projects have finally seen the light of day. Specifically, PM Modi pointed out the Sivok-Rangpo railway line, noting that while it was approved in 2008-09, it remained stagnant for years until the BJP-led government accelerated its construction to bring railway connectivity to Sikkim for the first time.

Critique of Past Governance
In a direct critique of previous administrations, PM Modi accused the Congress of intentionally hindering the developmental pace of the state. He stated that the progress being witnessed today could have been achieved decades ago if not for the “hindrances” created by successive opposition governments. According to PM Modi, the current government has shifted the focus from mere policy-making to rapid execution on the ground.
Sikkim: The Powerhouse of Tourism and Biodiversity
The Prime Minister also lauded Sikkim’s extraordinary natural wealth. Despite the state accounting for less than one percent of India’s total land area, it hosts more than 25 percent of the country’s floral diversity.
PM Modi identified the tourism economy as Sikkim’s greatest strength, fueled by:
Unique Wildlife: Home to over 500 species of birds and 700 species of butterflies.
Majestic Landscapes: The presence of Kanchenjunga and lush forests.
State-of-the-art Facilities: The newly visited Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari Park and the world-class Orchid Experience Centre.
Commitment to the Northeast
Concluding his two-day visit, PM Modi reiterated that the development of the Northeast is central to India’s “Act East” vision. By launching over 30 projects spanning multiple sectors, the Prime Minister sent a clear message that the region is no longer a peripheral concern but a core engine of national growth. The 50th Statehood celebrations concluded with a promise of sustained investment and a future where Sikkim is seamlessly integrated into the national mainstream.
