Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann highlights major reforms in government schools, including better infrastructure, teacher training and Parent-Teacher Meetings.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has highlighted the changes made in the state’s education sector, saying Punjab Government Schools have witnessed a major transformation over the past four years. He made the remarks during a Teachers’ Day programme organised by the Punjab Government at Vikas Bhawan in Sector 62, Mohali.
During the event, Mann felicitated 50 teachers for their contribution to education and acknowledged their role in shaping the future of students across the state.
CM Mann Highlights Changes in Government Schools
Speaking at the ceremony, Bhagwant Mann said his government has focused on improving infrastructure, strengthening staff and raising the overall quality of education in Punjab Government Schools.
Mann referred to Punjab’s education ranking before his government came to power in 2022 and claimed that significant improvements have been made since then.
Highlighting infrastructure upgrades, the Chief Minister said students in government schools now have access to proper benches. He also pointed to work carried out to improve school bathrooms and boundary walls.
According to Mann, the government has also worked on filling teaching and clerical positions while providing training to teachers to improve their professional skills.
Teachers’ Role Goes Beyond the Classroom
Addressing teachers at the event, Mann spoke about his personal connection with the teaching profession. He said he is the son of a teacher and has closely seen the challenges faced by teachers and their families.
The Chief Minister also praised teachers for their contribution to society, saying their influence extends far beyond classroom lessons.
He compared teachers to gardeners who nurture young minds. According to Mann, just as a gardener feels proud when a tree grows and bears fruit, teachers feel proud when their students achieve success in life.
Reducing Administrative Workload for Headmasters
Mann also discussed efforts to reduce the administrative responsibilities placed on school headmasters. He said headmasters previously had to deal with several issues ranging from damaged furniture and toilets to attendance records, leave applications and fee-waiver requests.
The Chief Minister said he had discussed the matter with the Education Minister and stressed that school heads should get more time to concentrate on teaching and academic activities instead of being occupied with administrative work.
The move, he said, is aimed at making school leadership more focused on improving learning outcomes.
Parent-Teacher Meetings Strengthened
Another initiative highlighted by Mann was the introduction of regular Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs) in Punjab Government Schools.
He said PTMs were traditionally associated more with private schools, while government institutions had not followed the practice on a similar scale. The initiative was introduced to strengthen communication between parents and teachers.
Mann said PTMs allow parents to understand the teachers responsible for their children’s education, while teachers can also learn more about students, their families and their circumstances.
He claimed that around 24 lakh parents participated in the previous PTM, describing the turnout as an important achievement for the education system.
CM Mann Urges Students to Avoid Cheating
During his address, Mann also encouraged students to depend on learning and hard work instead of cheating in examinations.
He said passing an examination through unfair means may provide a temporary benefit, but it cannot help students build the knowledge and skills needed for future challenges.
The Chief Minister stressed that genuine education is important for long-term success and personal growth.
Mann Remembers His School Teachers
Mann also recalled his school days and remembered several teachers who had played an important role in his life. He specifically mentioned Rameshwar Das along with his English teachers Ram and Kasturi Lal.
He said that even after entering the entertainment industry as an artist, he continued to meet his former teachers and express his respect by touching their feet.
Sharing his memories, Mann said the bond between a teacher and student can remain strong even years after school life ends.
Teachers Are the Gardeners of the Future
Mann said teachers play a crucial role in preparing children for their future. He described them as gardeners who nurture students with knowledge, discipline and guidance.
He added that his former teachers and professors still feel proud that the student they once taught went on to become the Chief Minister of Punjab.
Highlighting the lasting impact of education, Mann said a student cannot easily forget a teacher who has played a meaningful role in shaping their life.
Focus on Better Education in Punjab
The Teachers’ Day event underlined the Punjab Government’s focus on improving school infrastructure, supporting teachers, engaging parents and reducing unnecessary administrative work.
With these measures, Punjab Government Schools are being positioned as institutions where students can receive better facilities while teachers can devote more time to teaching and academic development.
The Chief Minister’s remarks also placed teachers at the centre of the state’s education reforms, recognising their contribution to building the next generation of Punjab.
