Punjab Govt announces relief for sanitation workers as three-year service employees will be regularised and contractual workers’ salaries increased.
The Punjab Government has announced a major welfare decision for sanitation workers across the state. Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains stated that the Bhagwant Mann-led government has approved important measures to improve job security, financial stability, and working conditions for Safai Karamcharis employed in municipal bodies.
Sanitation Workers Completing Three Years of Service to Get Regular Status
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Harjot Singh Bains announced that sanitation workers who have completed three years of service in any Municipal Corporation or Municipal Council of Punjab will be regularised.
The minister said the decision aims to provide permanent employment security and ensure dignity for thousands of sanitation workers who play a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness and public health in urban areas.
Contract Workers’ Salaries to Be Increased
Along with regularisation, the Punjab Government has also announced a significant salary benefit for contractual sanitation workers. Minister Bains said that the salaries of workers whose services have been regularised or moved under a permanent arrangement will be doubled.
According to the announcement, the monthly wages of contractual sanitation employees working under urban local bodies have increased from around ₹10,500 to ₹20,500, providing substantial financial relief to workers and their families.

Harjot Singh Bains said sanitation workers are the backbone of Punjab’s cities and their contribution cannot be ignored. He added that the decision reflects Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s commitment towards protecting the rights and welfare of employees working at the grassroots level.
The minister emphasized that ensuring better working conditions and financial security for sanitation workers remains a priority for the Punjab Government.
