Following the general elections for Gram Panchayats held on October 15, 2024, 90 Sarpanch seats and 1,771 Panch seats remain vacant across various districts, according to data provided by the Department of Rural Development and Panchayats. To fill these vacant positions, the Punjab State Election Commission has announced the schedule for the upcoming bye-elections.
As per the schedule, candidates can file their nominations from Monday, July 14, 2025, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., at the offices of the respective Returning Officers. The last date to submit nomination papers is Thursday, July 17, 2025, by 3 p.m. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on Friday, July 18, and the deadline for withdrawal of candidature is Saturday, July 19, up to 3 p.m.
Polling will be conducted on Sunday, July 27, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., using ballot papers. Vote counting will take place at the polling stations immediately after polling concludes.
The final updated electoral rolls were published by the respective District Election Officers on May 23, 2025. The expenditure limit for candidates contesting for the Sarpanch post is set at ₹40,000, while for Panch candidates, it is ₹30,000.
The Election Commission has ensured that all necessary logistical and administrative arrangements are in place to conduct the bye-elections in a smooth, free, and peaceful manner.
