Sanjay Singh criticises the Election Commission over alleged voter list irregularities in Uttar Pradesh, raises concerns over SIR and demands accountability.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP and Uttar Pradesh in-charge Sanjay Singh has launched a strong attack on the Election Commission over alleged irregularities in voter lists, questionable entries and suspected attempts to delete voters’ names in Uttar Pradesh. Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in Lucknow on Monday, he accused the poll body of failing to ensure transparency and accountability during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
Sanjay Singh Questions CEO Navdeep Rinwa’s Remarks
Speaking at the press conference, Sanjay Singh on Election Commission conduct said that the response of Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Navdeep Rinwa to concerns raised by AAP Purvanchal state president Rajesh Yadav was objectionable. According to Singh, Rinwa’s remarks, reportedly made around 12:30 am, reflected a communal mindset.
Singh criticised the explanation attributed to the CEO concerning alleged voter-list errors and questioned whether an officer making such statements could ensure impartial elections. He demanded strict action against Rinwa, alleging that the Election Commission’s response had raised serious concerns about the neutrality of the electoral process.
AAP Highlights Allegedly Distorted Names in Voter Lists
Sanjay Singh cited several entries that he claimed demonstrated serious errors in Uttar Pradesh’s electoral rolls. These included names such as “Ram ne maara Yadav ko”, with “Murkh Chand Yadav” reportedly listed as the father’s name, and “Takkar Marna”, whose father’s name was allegedly recorded as “Bittu Takkar Marna”.
He also referred to an entry for “Narendra Yadav” in which the father’s name was reportedly mentioned as “B.Com.” Another case involved Mohammed Iqbal Beg, whose name was allegedly altered to “Mohammed Iqbal Bheek Mangte Hai”.
According to Singh, officials had offered an explanation that the English phrase “Ram Hit Yadav” had been translated into Hindi as “Ram ne Yadav ko maara”. He argued that such explanations were unacceptable and demanded that the authorities investigate the alleged errors and correct the records.
Notices Issued to Prominent Figures Raise Questions
Sanjay Singh on Election Commission procedures also questioned what he described as inconsistencies in the issuance of notices under the SIR process.
He said notices over discrepancies in voter records had reportedly been issued to several prominent personalities, including former Deputy Prime Minister L. K. Advani, Bharat Ratna awardee Professor C. N. R. Rao, a former Army Chief, the External Affairs Minister, Election Commissioner Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, Arvind Kejriwal and Kapil Sibal.
Singh questioned why similar action had not been taken to correct allegedly distorted names in the electoral rolls. He demanded consistent standards for handling discrepancies, regardless of whether the individuals involved were influential figures or ordinary voters.
Sanjay Singh Alleges Targeted Deletion of Muslim Voters’ Names
The AAP leader also alleged that applications seeking the deletion of voter names showed a disproportionate focus on Muslim voters in several areas. He cited examples from Pilibhit, Tarabganj and other locations to support his allegations.
According to figures presented by Singh, Baburam submitted applications concerning 237 names in Pilibhit, of which 212 allegedly belonged to Muslim voters. In Tarabganj, Reshma reportedly submitted applications involving 188 names, including 174 Muslim voters.

He also cited other examples: Nisha’s applications reportedly covered 109 of 124 names, Dheeraj’s covered 97 of 112, Kamlesh in Jehanabad’s covered 65 of 75, Brijmohan’s covered 63 of 66, Devdatt’s covered 59 of 62, and Jaswant in Biswan’s covered 55 of 59.
Singh described these figures as evidence of a possible pattern of targeted deletions. However, the allegations require independent verification by the relevant electoral authorities.
He further claimed that around 13,000 identical EPIC numbers had been found in Pilibhit, approximately 7,000 suspicious voters had been identified in Basti, and a case involving 26 allegedly fake forms had surfaced in Sultanpur. He urged the Election Commission to investigate these claims and take corrective action.
Demand for Removal of Gorakhpur MLC Counting Observer
Sanjay Singh on Election Commission accountability also raised concerns over the appointment of Abhay Singh as the counting observer for the Gorakhpur region’s MLC elections. He alleged that Abhay Singh was under CBI investigation in a case involving claims of bribes from mining mafias.
Singh said BJP MLC Devendra Pratap Singh and BJP candidate Sanjayan Tripathi had also raised complaints regarding the appointment. He called on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Uttar Pradesh CEO to remove the observer before counting began, arguing that the move was necessary to protect the credibility of the process.
The allegations concerning the investigation and appointment were presented by Singh during the press conference.
Sanjay Singh Takes a Dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi
During the interaction with journalists, Singh also responded sarcastically to remarks attributed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about his own identity. Referring to the Prime Minister’s reported description of himself as “non-biological” and an avatar, Singh questioned the significance of ordinary criticism directed at someone making such a claim.
He also accused BJP workers of using abusive language against Opposition leaders and referred to alleged incidents involving the mistreatment of women and girls.
AAP Demands Transparency in the SIR Process
Concluding his remarks, Sanjay Singh on Election Commission functioning demanded a transparent investigation into alleged voter-list manipulation, incorrect entries and suspicious deletion applications. He said the electoral authorities must explain the discrepancies and ensure that eligible voters are not deprived of their voting rights.
The AAP leader maintained that his party would continue raising these issues until the alleged irregularities were addressed. The claims made at the press conference have not been independently established in this account, and responses from the Election Commission and the officials concerned would be necessary to assess the allegations fully.
