Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Delhi unit president Saurabh Bhardwaj has questioned the BJP-led celebrations marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, citing the recent Satya Niketan PG building collapse in which seven people lost their lives.
The AAP leader said the tragedy had left families and students grieving and questioned the timing of large-scale birthday celebrations in the capital. The Satya Niketan building collapse took place on September 6 and claimed seven lives, including students.
Saurabh Bhardwaj Raises Questions Over Timing of Celebrations
Saurabh Bhardwaj shared a video on social media on Thursday and referred to the upcoming 13th-day mourning ceremony of those who died in the Satya Niketan tragedy.
According to his statement, the victims’ families are still observing a period of mourning, while celebrations connected with the Prime Minister’s birthday are being held across Delhi.
AAP has criticised the Delhi government over programmes planned for September 17, including lamp-lighting events, a Kundiya Yajna and a blood donation camp.

Satya Niketan Collapse Claimed Seven Lives
The tragedy that triggered the political controversy occurred on September 6, when a five-storey building being used as a private PG accommodation collapsed in Satya Niketan, near Delhi University’s South Campus.
Seven people died in the incident, while others were rescued from the debris. Police investigations have focused on the building’s construction and repair work, while the civic authorities have also faced scrutiny over safety and regulatory compliance.
The Delhi High Court has also taken up the matter and expressed serious concern over the circumstances surrounding the collapse. The court has questioned the broader safety situation involving student accommodation in the capital.
Religious Customs Cited in Saurabh Bhardwaj’s Statement
Saurabh Bhardwaj referred to Hindu mourning traditions while explaining his objection to the timing of the celebrations. He said that, according to the traditions cited by him, the period leading up to the thirteenth-day ceremony is observed as a mourning period.
He argued that public celebrations during such a period could be perceived as insensitive toward the families of those who died.
The AAP leader also appealed to Delhi University students and the wider public to take note of the situation and consider the concerns surrounding student safety and accommodation in the capital.
Debate Over Student Safety After the Tragedy
The Satya Niketan collapse has also renewed discussion about the safety of privately operated PG accommodations in Delhi. Investigators have arrested people linked to the property and its operation, while the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has faced questions over regulatory oversight.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced measures including structural safety audits and periodic safety certification for PGs, hostels and other buildings used by the public.
AAP Continues Its Criticism of Delhi Government
Saurabh Bhardwaj said the government should give priority to the concerns of students and families affected by the Satya Niketan tragedy. His comments came as AAP continued to criticise the Delhi government over the Prime Minister’s birthday programmes.
The political dispute has therefore brought two issues into focus at the same time: the ongoing response to the Satya Niketan building collapse and the nature and timing of public celebrations in Delhi.
Saurabh Bhardwaj has maintained that the tragedy and the safety of students should remain central to the discussion, while the investigation into the building collapse continues.
